USF Picks Up Third-Straight Win With 1-0 Shutout Over FGCU

Javain Brown notches his second goal of the season and his second-straight game winner

TAMPA (Oct. 1, 2019) – Javain Brown (Kingston, Jamaica), the reigning American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, came up big on the offensive side of the ball and recorded his second goal in as many outings, and his second consecutive game winner, as the USF men’s soccer team handed Florida Gulf Coast a 1-0 loss at Corbett Stadium Tuesday night. The win improves the Bulls to 6-2 on the year while the Eagles drop to 3-5-2 overall. The win is USF’s third-straight, and its sixth victory in its last seven matches.

The Bulls had numerous opportunities in during the match, however it was Brown who gave the Green and Gold all the scoring that they would need. In a play eerily similar to his winner against UConn on Sept. 28, at Corbett Stadium, Brown took an offering from Freddy Gil (West Palm Beach, Fla.) off a corner kick and headed it past the Eagles’ goalkeeper Connor Gavigan. Against the Huskies it was Avionne Flanagan (Baltimore, Md.) who served up the assist to Brown.

After Brown’s offensive heroics, he then helped to lead the defense in shutting down the Eagles and never allowing them to threaten USF’s keeper, Harrison Devenish-Meares (Sydney, Australia), who finished the night with one save. In addition, USF’s clean sheet was its second in the last three matches and its third of the season. It was also Devenish-Meares’ sixth shutout of his career.

Adrian Billhardt (Berlin, Germany) and Emilio Ycaza (St. Petersburg, Fla.) each led the team with two shots on the night.

Despite USF’s various chances, each side finished the match with 12 shots while the Bulls held a slight 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Quotable

“It was a classic Florida Darby, there is no doubt about that, especially against a place that I have a lot of ties to, as we know, so the game lived up to what it should have been last year but is has been over the years. I am just proud of my guys and the way they responded to different things. We created a number of chances and I think that we are getting close, but in all honesty, it was just a good game on a Tuesday night which is sometimes very difficult.”  – USF head coach Bob Butehorn on USF’s win over Florida Gulf Coast.
