The UAB Players’ Tribune: Michael Ertel

Blazer Nation,We are less than six weeks away from opening night and I can’t wait to put on the Green and Gold for the first time.
Although I’m new to Birmingham, I’ve enjoyed my time in the months that I have lived here.  Here’s how my voyage began. Growing up in Indiana, almost everybody played basketball. As a kid, my Dad and I were always shooting around. I really took a liking to it. I started playing in youth leagues and began to play travel ball in 6th grade. But when I got to high school, that’s when I started to take basketball seriously. Out of high school, the recruiting process was pretty much nonexistent. I didn’t have many calls. Initially, Army called, but they decided to move in another direction. But one of the other calls was from Coach Cross at Louisiana Monroe. That fall going into my senior year I decided to go with him because he trusted me before anybody. After three seasons at ULM, I made the tough decision to go into the transfer portal. I love Monroe. I love the school. When Coach Cross left, who was a figure of stability, I knew transferring was the best thing to do for my senior season. It broke my heart to leave all the people and my teammates. When I entered the portal, so many people assumed I’d go to Butler. As a kid, it was my dream school.  It’s right next to home. But at the end of the day, I didn’t think Butler was for me – wearing the jersey just wouldn’t have felt right. But UAB really stood out. Coach Cross is like family to me and I trust him, I knew he could put me in a good situation here. I knew Coach Kennedy could turn me into something special. So, I decided to transfer to UAB. When you move to a new city it’s tough to meet new people – especially during a pandemic. But I like Birmingham, it’s got a small-town feel, but it’s a big city. I live in an apartment downtown, so there are always lot things to do. I’m excited to play with my teammates. We’ve been going up against the same people for three or four months now. So, when we can finally go up against somebody in a different jersey, we look forward to working as a unit to beat them and get people in Birmingham excited about our team. We have a lot of work to do, but we’re going to get better every day. I can’t wait to play in front of our fans. I can feel the buzz around the city. Everybody is talking about the team and how excited they are because Coach Kennedy is back. I know that more and more fans will come, and I can’t wait until they pack Bartow. ===
