MIAMI (Feb. 8, 2021) – The spring slate for FIU Athletics is in full swing after this past week, as four sports were in action.
FIU enjoyed another successful week of action, as the spring slate moves into February. Below is a recap of how each sport fared this past week.
Men’s Basketball
Jeremy Ballard‘s squad earned a 90-74 win over Florida Memorial to begin last week’s action on Monday, before dropping two tough contests to UTSA at home. The Panthers will continue the C-USA slate on the road this weekend, as FIU travels to UTEP for a pair of games on Feb. 12-13. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+.
Women’s Basketball
The FIU women’s basketball team swept UTSA on the road over the weekend, as the Panthers now sit with their most wins in a season since 2013-14. Fujika Nimmo led the squad over the weekend, with a highlight 28-point game in FIU’s triple-overtime victory against the Roadrunners on Saturday. FIU returns home this weekend, as the Panthers host UTEP on Feb. 12-13. Friday’s game will tipoff at 7 p.m. ET, while Saturday’s contest will start at 2 p.m. ET.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
The FIU indoor track and field team picked up four victories this past Saturday, as the Panthers finished runner-up at the Marshall Classic in Huntington, West Virginia. Sophomore Maria Guerrero earned a victory in the mile, Fabiola Declet won the long jump, Harrison Mancke took the shot put, and the 4×600 relay team saw themselves finish first in an impressive performance across the board for FIU. The Panthers are back in Huntington this Saturday, Feb. 13, as FIU takes part in the Marshall Invitational.
Women’s Soccer
The FIU women’s soccer team opened its spring season under new head coach Jonathan Garbar this past Sunday, as the Panthers earned a 2-0 home victory over Jacksonville. FIU was led by Kédie Johnson, who scored the go-ahead goal late and added an assist minutes later to put the match away for good. The Panthers now get ready for a four-match road trip, beginning on Friday, Feb. 12, against North Florida.
