FAU Women’s Soccer Win Streak Snapped by LA Tech

RUSTON, La. – (Oct. 4, 2019) – A golden goal in the 99th minute snapped the six-match winning streak of Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer, as they were topped Friday evening by Louisiana Tech, 1-0.

The Turning Point:

The Owls (8-3-0, 2-1-0 C-USA) and Lady Techsters (10-1-1, 2-1-0 C-USA) sat scoreless at halftime, and despite FAU holding an 8-1 shot advantage in the second half, it was the samestalemate through 90 minutes.

The Finish:

Shots by Pernille Velta and Mary O’Hara were saved in the 94th and 96th, respectively. Just a couple of minutes later, a Lady Techster attacker got behind the backline, fended off a trailing defender, and slotted it to the right of the diving and oncoming FAU keeper Cassidy Wasdin for the game-winning goal.

Notables:

·         The Owls fell despite doubling their LA Tech opponents in shots, 14-7, and shots on goal, 6-3

·         O’Hara had nearly half of the team’s attempts, six, with two on target

·         Velta and Sammy Vitols each had two shots

·         Wasdin, Alex Maxson and Luisa Daikeler played the full 98:25

Quotable:

“Tough day,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “Early afternoon kickoff, didn’t really get into the game early like we wanted to. Thought Louisiana Tech had a better start. Probably about halfway through, we started to pick it up a little bit. We got some fresh legs on, that definitely changed and helped a little bit.

“In overtime, we decided if we won the toss, we’d take the wind. Definitely had the ball down in their end quite a bit, but … we knew they defend well, get numbers behind the ball, can spring you and can spring (Autumn Woodard) and that’s what they did.”
