2024 American Women’s Golf Championship Returns to Southern Hills Plantation Club

IRVING, Texas – For a second straight year, the American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship is headed to Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brookesville, Florida. The American Women’s Golf Championship is scheduled for April 15-17 with teams playing three 18-hole rounds., with live coverage of the third and final round to air on ESPN+ at 10 a.m. ET.

 
Split tee times will begin on April 15 between 8-8:40 a.m. (ET) off the first tee with No. 1 seed SMU, No. 2 seed South Florida and No. 3 seed North Texas, while No. 7 seed Florida Atlantic, No. 8 seed Tulane and No. 9 seed Charlotte will tee off on hole ten. Players from No. 4 seed Tulsa, No. 5 seed UTSA and No. 6 seed East Carolina will head out from 8:50-9:30 a.m. off hole one, while No. 10 seed Memphis, No. 11 seed UAB and No. 12 seed Wichita State will begin on the 10th tee. The field will be re-paired for both day two and day three based on the previous round’s scoring, with split tee times off numbers one and 10 awaiting the round three pairings.

SMU LOOKING TO REPEAT AS AMERICAN CHAMPION
Over the first nine American Women’s Golf Championship tournaments only Houston has managed to defend the team title, repeating as the conference champion in both 2018 and 2019. Entering the 2024 conference tournament SMU will look to join the Cougars with a repeat victory at Southern Hills.

The Mustangs paced the field for all three days, winning the American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship for the first time in 2023 after shooting a tournament record 25-under, 839 (276-289-274). SMU returns two members of the American All-Conference team from a season ago in sophomore Mackenzie Lee and senior Ellie Szeryk.

Five programs will be competing in The American Women’s Golf Championships for the first time, as North Texas, UTSA, Florida Atlantic, Charlotte and UAB are in their first season in the league.  The Mean Green will look to challenge cross-town rival SMU as North Texas enters The American winning the previous three Conference USA Championships.


AMERICAN WOMEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS SOUTHERN HILLS

For a second consecutive season, the American Women’s Golf Championship will be contested at the Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club in Brooksville, Florida. The course will play at a par-72 and measure approximately 6,289 yards for the weekend.

Southern Hills was designed by renowned golf course architect Pete Dye and opened for play in 2006. The club has hosted both PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour qualifying school tournaments and will serve as the 2024 Monday qualifier site for the PGA TOUR’s Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor.

SMU enters the 2024 American Women’s Golf Championship slotted 28th in the latest Golfstat team rankings from April 10 to pace the conference. South Florida (33), North Texas (48), Tulsa (53), UTSA (61) and East Carolina (86) are also ranked in the Top 100.
 
South Florida’s Melanie Green is the top ranked individual player from The American according to Golfstat, checking in at 17th in the April 10 rankings. Four other golfers are ranked in the Top 100 – SMU’s Mackenzie Lee (30), UTSA’s Camryn Carreon (73), SMU’s Emily Odwin (74) and SMU’s Ellie Szeryk (91).
