USF Rally Falls Short in Loss to Northeastern

The Bulls score five in their series finale loss against Northeastern, 7-5.

TAMPA (Feb. 23, 2020) – The USF baseball team fell to Northeastern in the series finale Sunday afternoon, 7-5.

The Bulls (2-6) jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Julio Cortez (Weston, Fla.) drove in the first run of the game for the Bulls, drawing a walk with the bases loaded. Carmine Lane (Lake Placid, Fla.) would follow with a two-run double to left field, scoring JD Dutka (Suwanee, Ga.) and Dylan Buck (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.).

Northeastern (3-3) answered back, scoring six runs through the next four innings to lead, 7-3.

USF fought back with a late rally in the bottom of the ninth. After Lane doubled to left center, Daniel Cantu (Saint Johns, Fla.) would drive in the first run of his career with a double down the right field line. Cantu would come in to score to cut the Husky lead to two runs off an error at short.

Nick Davila (Hialeah, Fla.) suffered the loss on the hill for the Bulls allowing two runs on two hits through 0.1 innings.

Notable

·        Carmine Lane went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

·        Daniel Cantu earned his first extra base hit and RBI of his career.

·        Logan Lyle (Bartow, Fla.) made his team-leading fifth appearance.

·        Tanner Mink (Palm Harbor, Fla.) recorded his first career hit in his first plate appearance.

·        Carson Ragsdale (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) tossed nine strikeouts through five innings.

The University of South Florida baseball program is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. The Bulls earned their third NCAA Regional berth in the last four seasons and had six all-conference selections in 2018.
