SB: USF Sweeps Weekend With Victory Over No. 12 Tennessee

Corrick earned her fourth win of the weekend, while Hartman and Filla tallied RBI in the win

TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 23, 2020 – The University of South Florida softball team earned its fourth consecutive win to close out the USF Invitational with a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Tennessee. Georgina Corrick earned the complete-game victory while a three-run third inning powered the Bulls offense in the triumph.

Tennessee jumped out to the early lead, plating a run in the first inning. Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) settled in afterwards, sitting down the Lady Vols in order in the second and facing one over the minimum in the third.

USF (6-7) rallied to take the lead in the third inning. Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) and AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) reached base to start the inning. Brooke Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.) kept the offensive success going with a single, which drove home Sheehan to tie the game. In the next at-bat, an error allowed Bruni to score and Alexis Buchman (Tampa, Fla.), who pinch ran for Hartman, to reach third. Tayli Filla (Fort Myers, Fla.) capped the rally with a single which scored Buchman to give USF a 3-1 lead.

Tennessee loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Corrick ended the threat by catching a pop-up and forcing a line-out to Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.).

Pitchers dueled until the seventh, when Tennessee looked to stage a comeback. A double followed by a single allowed the Lady Vols to cut the deficit to one. Then, with two outs, UT loaded the bases to further threaten USF’s lead. However, a pop-up to Kyndall Williams (Trenton, Fla.) ended the inning and gave the Bulls a 3-2 victory.

Quotable
Coach Jessica Moore on if the weekend’s performance gives the team a confidence boost…
“I think it does. It shows them that they belong. I think sometimes that can be a question. When you come out and beat some good teams, it starts the momentum. I’m hoping that we can carry on that momentum through these next weeks of practice and games.”
