USF Gears Up for First Edition of War on I-4

The Bulls and Knights get set for the first of two meetings, beginning Wednesday at Corbett Stadium.

TAMPA (Sept. 28, 2021) – The University of South Florida men’s soccer team returns home to Corbett Stadium, on Wednesday, for the first edition of the War on I-4 against rival UCF. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Fans who can’t make it out in person can watch it live on ESPN+. 

In addition to Wednesday’s meeting, the two sides will also face off on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in Orlando.

THE SERIES VS. UCF

– USF has dominated the all-time series leading UCF 23-8-3, including an impressive 14-5 mark in Tampa … The Green and Gold enjoy a sizable goals advantage in the series, 67-39. 

– The Bulls and Knights split their two matches last season, 1-1 … The last meeting between the two sides came on March 27, 2021, with UCF taking the victory in double overtime, 1-0 … USF’s last win against the Knights was on February 20, 2021, 2-1.

– Wednesday marks the first of two War on I-4 tilts this season between the Bulls and UCF … The two sides will meet again on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in Orlando.

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS

– UCF comes into its match with USF, 4-3 on the year and 2-0 in The American … The Knights are coming off a 4-1 win over Temple on Friday night.

– UCF has won its last three straight matches after starting the season 1-3 … Friday’s game marked the third consecutive match that UCF scored within the first 15 minutes of play.

A LOOK AHEAD

– Following Wednesday’s match against UCF, the Bulls will play its first of two away games against Tulsa, in Oklahoma, on Oct. 3 … Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET

– The Bulls will then head to Philadelphia to play Temple on Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., before returning to Corbett Stadium on Oct. 15, to face Memphis.

CORBETT ATTENDANCE POLICY

– For the first time since Nov. 9, 2019, Corbett Stadium will return to full-capacity seating for fans, a stretch of 647-days entering USF’s season-opening match against Jacksonville on Aug. 26.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 3 trips to the elite eight.

USF Soccer concluded the 2020 season with four players earning AAC honors, highlighted by first first-team selection Josue Monge and Salvatore Mazzaferro who was tabbed a second-team selection. Also, Oscar Resano and Brian Schaefer were named to the American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team. Head coach Bob Butehorn returns to lead USF in his fifth season on the sidelines.
