USF Defeats Iowa State in Weekend Finale

Corrick earned the complete-game win and hit the game-winning home run

TAMPA, Fla., March 8, 2020 – The University of South Florida softball team wrapped up the USF Tournament with a 5-3 win over Iowa State on Sunday afternoon. Georgina Corrick pitched a complete game and helped her own case with a game-winning three-run home run in the third.

Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) exited the weekend going 4-0 at the USF Tournament. Over 23.2 innings pitched, the junior only allowed 16 hits and two earned runs, while striking out 37 batters, including 18 against Wisconsin which tied the USF single-game record set by Erica Nunn in 2014.

USF struck first in the bottom of the second. After the Bulls loaded the bases, AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) walked to force home Kelsey Lay (West Palm Beach, Fla.), giving USF the 1-0 lead.

Corrick, while dealing in the circle, was also in the batting order for the weekend finale. In the third inning, she helped her pitching performance, hitting a three-run shot to right field to extend USF’s lead to 4-0, scoring Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) and Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.), who both reached on singles to start the inning.

Iowa State broke up the shutout bid in the sixth, doubling home two runs to shrink USF’s lead to two. USF responded in the bottom of the inning, though, when Bailee Leistl (Valrico, Fla.) doubled down the left-field line and Pierro drove her home with a single to give USF a 5-2 advantage.

Iowa State attempted to complete the comeback in the seventh, but only managed to score one run before Corrick and the USF defense shut the door to clinch the 5-3 victory.

Quotable
Coach Jessica Moore on Corrick producing on both sides of the ball…
“We see that every day at practice. Georgina has matured in that manner, of where she’s able to do both things right now, pitch and hit. She’s taking advantage of her opportunities. She’s not fearful of them. She goes right at them. That’s where we’re seeing her do pretty well right now.”
