FAU Baseball Drops Series with Sunday Loss

BOCA RATON, Fla. – (March 8, 2020) – A five-run fourth, with all runs scoring with two outs, was all Northeastern needed in defeating the Florida Atlantic University baseball team on Sunday afternoon, 6-1.

Quotable

Head Coach John McCormack:

“Disappointing end to the weekend. Their guy (Sebastian Keane) threw really well, we didn’t make any adjustments at the plate. And again, the big-run inning really hurt us … we’ve got to figure out a way to get out of an inning.”

The Turning Point

Each freshman starter had thrown up three zeroes heading into the fourth, and FAU’s (9-6) Dante Visconti retired the first two of that inning as well. But a hit batter and three singles scored two runs, and a three-run home run pushed Northeastern’s (9-5) lead to 5-0.

The Finish

Meanwhile, NU’s Sebastian Keane retired the first 11 Owls he faced before a walk, and threw 4 2/3 hitless innings before a two-out single by Jared DeSantolo. The batter prior, Alex Arauz, had walked, went to third on the hit, and came in to score on a Wilfredo Alvarez single. But that literally was all the offense FAU got on the day. A groundout ended that inning and was the first of 13 consecutive outs to end the game by three NU pitchers.

The Arms

·         Visconti dropped to 1-1 with the loss

·         Brycen Allen and Jon Jon Kostantis dealt two scoreless innings each, each the beneficiary of a groundout double play

The Bats

·         The Owls were held to two hits and two walks

·         Alvarez notched his fourth RBI; Arauz scored his sixth run
