USF Baseball: Clutch hitting lifts Bulls over Stony Brook, 9-3

Ben Rozenblum went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI on Saturday night.

TAMPA (February 26, 2022) – The University of South Florida (3-2) plated eight two-out runs on Saturday night as the Bulls clinched a series win over Stony Brook (1-4) in a 9-3 victory at USF Baseball Stadium.

South Florida led wire-to-wire in game two of the series as Daniel Cantu (Jacksonville) and Keanu Jacobs-Guishard (Philipsburg, St. Maarten) recorded two-out, run-scoring hits in the opening frame.

Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) staked starting pitcher Brad Lord (Crawfordville) to a 4-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Lord (2-0) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out three over 5.1 IP for his second win in as many starts.

Stony Brook got on the board with a run in the top of the third inning before Joaquin Monque (Weston) drilled a solo homer to deep left field to extend the USF lead to 5-1.

The Seawolves cut their deficit to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth where the score remained until Ben Rozenblum (Coral Springs) added some two-out insurance with a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Devin Hemenway (Niceville), Hunter Mink (Palm Harbor) and Austin Grause (Tampa) combined to hold Stony Brook scoreless over the final four frames on the mound.

Notable

  • Rozenblum has hit safely in all five games this season, including three multi-hit efforts.
  • Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) went 2-for-5 with a walk, double and one RBI.
  • Lane went 3-for-4 at the plate.
  • Jackson Mayo (St. Johns) recorded his first collegiate hit in the eighth inning.
