USF and No. 6 Miami Meet in Coral Gables on Wednesday

The Bulls travel south before a three-game series at home this weekend.

TAMPA (Feb. 25, 2020) – The USF baseball team heads to Coral Gables for a midweek test against No. 6 Miami on Wednesday afternoon.

Head coach Billy Mohl’s Bulls (2-6) will look to get back on track after falling in their home series against Northeastern this past weekend.

Jack Jasiak (Spring Hill, Fla.) had another impressive outing during his second start of the season. The freshman right-hander struck out 11 Northeastern batters through 7.1 innings during the second game of the doubleheader on Feb. 22.

Several Bulls found themselves top three in The American in stat categories after two weeks of play. Dontae Mitchell (St. Petersburg, Fla.) leads the AAC in walks at seven. Logan Lyle (Bartow, Fla.) has made the most appearances (5), while Nick Gonzalez (Tampa, Fla.) is third in stolen bases with four. Jake Sullivan (Tampa, Fla.), and JD Dutka (Suwanee, Ga.) are tied for second in at-bats with 31. Jasiak leads the conference in strikeouts looking with eight, walks allowed (1), total strikeouts (20), and he sits third in innings pitched at 14.1.

Junior right-hander Baron Stuart (Okeechobee, Fla.) will get the start on the mound for the Bulls in their midweek battle with No. 6 Miami. Stuart seeks his first win of the season and has nine strikeouts through 6.2 innings.

The Matchup

The Bulls will travel to Coral Gables for the 66th time to face No. 6 Miami. The Hurricanes head into Wednesday’s game currently leading the all-time series between the two programs, 82-29.

Know the Foe

·         No. 6 Miami heads into the Wednesday matchup against the Bulls at 4-3. The Hurricanes fell to No. 1 Florida this past weekend, dropping their three-game series.

·        Freshman right-hander Alex McFarlane will get the call on the mound for Miami. McFarlane enters the midweek battle with a 6.23 ERA through 4.1 innings pitched.

·        Tanner Mink (Palm Harbor, Fla.) recorded his first career hit in his first plate appearance.

·        Logan Lyle enter the midweek game leading the Bulls in appearances with five.

·        Jack Jasiak leads USF in strikeouts with 20.

·        Carmine Lane (Lake Placid, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double against Northeastern on Feb. 23.

About USF Baseball

The University of South Florida baseball program is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. The Bulls earned their third NCAA Regional berth in the last four seasons and had six all-conference selections in 2018. Four players were selected in the 2018 MLB Draft, including the program’s fourth first rounder, pitcher Shane McClanahan. Third baseman David Villar was taken in the 11th round after being named first team all-conference and an All-American.
