Trans-Am Series Headlines SVRA Vintage Classic at Sebring
This weekend, the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli will build on a long tradition of racing at Sebring International Speedway, headlining the Feb. 28-March 1 SVRA Sebring Vintage Classic for its 15th appearance there since the series’ first-ever race in 1966.
That year, a brand-new series featuring “pony car” entries from Detroit’s Big Three automakers debuted at the Florida airport course with the running of the Governor’s Cup — the first race for the SCCA-sanctioned Trans American Sedan Championship.
That inaugural event included the then-two-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt, driving a Ford Mustang, and Alfa Romeo’s Jochen Rindt, who would win the 1970 Formula 1 World Championship.
Foyt led the opening 13 laps before dropping back following a long pit stop. Later in the four-hour event, tire issues, brake problems and overheating hit many of the competitors on the over-two-liter class, made up of Mustangs, Chevrolet Corvairs, Plymouth Barracudas and Dodge Darts.
Bob Tullius went on to win the larger class in a Dart, finishing second overall. Meanwhile, Alfas dominated the under-two-liter category, led by Rindt, who recovered from a roll-over in pre-event practice to win the race overall. In addition to the Trans-Am series, a full lineup of vintage races is on the schedule.

Sebring International Raceway Becomes NHRA Member Track
Sebring International Raceway has become a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Member Track, allowing all drag racing activities at the Florida track to be governed by the rules of the United States’ primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing.
Best known as the Birthplace of American Endurance Racing and the famed Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts, Sebring is also home to a grass roots drag racing program on the front stretch of the famed Raceway.
The 2020 Air & Electrical Services Sebring Drag Racing schedule will include 12 events, a majority of which will be on Thursday nights. Two special events – the Sebring Battle at the Bridge and the Sebring Summer Showdown, will be high-prize-money weekend events attracting competitors from throughout Florida and the Southeast. The complete schedule will be announced soon, with the first night of the season tentatively scheduled for April 16.
Competitors race Sebring’s eighth-mile drag strip on the same concrete surface that IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA WEC World Endurance Championship drivers compete on each March. All drag races at Sebring are heads up races, making competitors come with their fastest cars and allowing fans an easy format to follow. “Every year the Air & Electrical Services Sebring Drag Racing program grows, particularly for our fans,” said Matt Muha, Sebring’s drag racing director. “We’ve had good car counts every year and with the NHRA behind us we believe we will have even larger fields in 2020.”
All races at Sebring will continue to be operated by Sebring personnel under the NHRA rule book. Decisions regarding participating classes, entries, promotion, etc. will be managed by Raceway officials. Aside from serious racing between the fastest cars, Sebring also provides fans who have a thrill for speed an opportunity to race their cars on the track in test-and-tune sessions. The test-and-tune nights allow drivers to run their cars in all-out, full-throttle passes without fear of a traffic ticket.
