UF WGOLF: Gators Narrowly Miss Cut for NCAA Championships

Florida records its best card of the three-day competition, but drops a heartbreaker after late-round push falls one stroke short in NCAA Regional.

STANFORD, Calif. –  The University of Florida women’s golf team finished competition today in Stanford, finishing one stroke behind the University of Southern California and seventh overall to narrowly miss the top-six cut for NCAA Championship play in Arizona.

In a round that came down to the very last golfer on the 18th hole, the Trojans and Gators found themselves battling stroke-for-stroke. Maisie Filler stepped up to the plate for Florida, recording back-to-back-to-back birdies on the 15th through 17th greens and moving the team into striking distance.

The freshman made par on her final hole of postseason play, but a clutch 11-foot par from Southern California’s Amelia Garvey nixed the Gators chances of tying the Trojans score and heading to a playoff for the coveted final qualifying spot.

Overall, Filler shined in her first NCAA Regional. The Palm Beach Gardens native finished the tournament with three even scorecards over three rounds and tied for 12th place individually, the best finish of her collegiate career.

Standouts Addie Baggarly and Annabell Fuller added matching 1-under par scorecards in the final round of play at Stanford. Baggarly flashed her calming senior presence as she made the turn to the back nine, carding three birdies over five holes to claim her under-par scorecard when the Gators needed her the most. The duo finished tied for 24th and 38th, respectively.

Clara Manzalini joined Fuller on the leaderboard in a tie for 38th individually.

Marina Escobar rounded out the Gators lineup after finishing her three rounds of stroke play 7-over par and tied for 43rd individually.

The Gators will now set their sights on the off-season as they prepare for what promises to be a bright future.

Coach’s Take
Emily Glaser, Head Coach
“Hats off to Arizona, they played great today and did what they needed to do to clinch their spot. We still had a shot coming down the stretch and they fought hard. It’s certainly tough to end the season this way and be so close.”

On the year…
“This whole year has been a huge learning experience. For our players, our staff, everyone. This team has faced adversity on and off the course. And although I hate for them to go through these situations, I know it will pay off in time.”

On the future…
“For our three players who just went through their first postseason, they won’t soon forget these experiences that will shape how they live out their legacy over the next few years. I’m positive they will mature into a team that can contend.”
