Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie agrees to resign.

The Broward County School Board has approved an exit package of $743,052 for the departure of Superintendent Robert Runcie. The Board discussed the matter for about three hours and voted 5 to 4 to approve it. August 10 will be Runcie’s last day. He will probably stop serving as superintendent after an interim superintendent is named. There was concern that Runcie be treated fairly and respectfully as he leaves his position. The exit arrangement includes an amount of $145,000 in severance pay, more than $233,000 in vacation and sick time and more than$187,000 in payments into his retirement account.
Board Chair Dr. Rosalind Osgood said how this matter is handled can move the district forward or set it back. Board members Nora Rupert, Sarah Leonardi, Debbi Hixon and Lori Alhadeff opposed the agreement. Leonardi said it involved too much money.
This arrangement was developed by Runcie’s lawyer and Osgood. The discussions began after Runcie’s arrest in April for perjury to a grand jury. Following his arrest, Board member Lori Alhadeff asked for the resignation for the second time. Her daughter Alyssa Alhadeff was killed the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. This time Runcie agreed to resign.

update
The total separation package for Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie is $754,900. It appears that he will stay until early August. The School Board was divided on paying him so much money for leaving. Board member Laurie Rich Levinson said it is important to treat a department superintendent well because potential candidates for the high-level position will be watching the situation. Board member Sarah Leonardi was concerned about the amount of money being paid to Runcie for leaving. Board Chair Dr. Rosalind Osgood said it is important to bring the community back together again. During the meeting where the settlement was approved, Diana Runcie, the wife of Robert Runcie spoke and asked the board to consider the efforts he made to lead the school district especially following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Following this tragic event, a group of parents, many of whom lost children in the shooting made a strong effort to get Runcie fired.
Runcie was arrested on April 21 on a perjury charge. He is accused of contacting a grand jury witness and then lying about it in his testimony. General Counsel Barbara Myrick was arrested and is accused of illegally disclosing grand jury testimony. Chief Information Officer Tony Hunter is charged with bid rigging and bribery.

Coral Springs to offer Chris Chambers Football Academy

Young people who want to improve their football skills and prepare for higher levels of competition may want to consider participating in a new program.

Chris Chambers, former NFL wide receiver, is bringing his own youth-focused Chamber Football Academy to the City of Coral Springs. It will provide young and upcoming athletes with multiple options for football development training. Chambers is committed to partnering with the city to offer local football development and performance training for underserved communities through his CATCH84 Foundation (Children Achieving Through Community Help).

Chambers said, “Far too many times, talented young athletes are overlooked and undervalued because they don’t have access to the best resources providing performance training and quality exposure. Coral Springs does not offer this kind of program, even though there is a wealth of young athletic talent. Using my own personal experience through the Chamber Football Academy, this is a great resource for Coral Springs youth. With the right mentorship to build a child’s foundation with high-quality athletic development, these kids will have greater opportunities for success.”

The Chamber Football Academy will bring elite level football development to Coral Springs. It will include sponsored football events from the NFL foundation for the city’s middle school and high school athletes to assist in the evaluation process and college recruitment. The training programs offer multiple options catered to the needs of different age groups.

The program will be offered at Mullins Park. It will include fundamental football skill development, position specific training, concepts and situational football, speed and agility training, competition, and mentorship. This camp will enhance a youth football player’s football IQ and overall awareness of the game. Chambers was a top football player at the University of Wisconsin and Miami Dolphins Rookie of the Year. He also earned the MVP award for the Dolphins and was a NFL Pro-Bowl selection. He played in the NFL for ten years and was a member of the Dolphins, Chargers and Chiefs. To sign up for the camp go to the City of Coral Springs website.
