Smith posted the fifth-fastest time ever in the SCM 400 Free

MELBOURNE, Australia – Kieran Smith broke a 13-year old record early Thursday morning at the 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships. Smith, one of Florida’s most decorated swimmers, took gold in the men’s short course 400m free, beating his personal best in the event by over a second.

Smith is only the second American man to win the title, and the first since March of 2000. His time of 3:34.38 in the event is the lowest American time since 2009.

A 2020 400m free Bronze Medalist, Smith notched the fifth-fastest time ever in the men’s SCM 400 free event.

The 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships continue through Sunday, Dec. 18.
