UF LAX | Three Gators Earn AAC Weekly Honors

Brianna Harris, Shannon Kavanagh and Cara Trombetta pick up AAC accolades in Week 10

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After clinching a share of the American Athletic Conference Championship and securing the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament with a series sweep of Vanderbilt, three Gators earned AAC weekly honors, as the league announced Monday.

Brianna Harris each her second-straight Attacker of the Week award this season, while Shannon Kavanagh nabbed her fifth Midfielder of the Week honor in the 2021 campaign. Cara Trombetta rounded out the Florida honorees with a spot on the Honor Roll – her fifth AAC accolade this season.

Harris tallied 11 points on six goals and five assists in Florida’s two wins against the Commodores. She also notched three draw controls, one groundball and one caused turnover in the series.

In Friday’s game, Harris posted five goals – tying her career-best mark – and added an assist in the 17-7 victory. She posted a .714 shot percentage on 5-of-7 shooting, while recording one groundball and one caused turnover. Harris followed that performance with a five-point showing in Sunday’s 22-9 win, recording one goal, four helpers and three draw controls in the game.

Kavanagh had herself a weekend, totaling 12 points on 10 goals and two assists against Vanderbilt. She tallied a series-best 21 draw controls, while also notching four groundballs and three caused turnovers.

The Smithtown, N.Y. native recorded four points on three goals and one assist in Friday’s game against Vanderbilt. She dominated the draw circle, notching a season-high 11 draw controls, while also registering one groundball and one caused turnover. In Sunday’s matchup,
Kavanagh tallied eight points – tying her career-best mark – on seven goals and one assist. With her 10 draw controls, she became Florida’s all-time leader in career draw controls, surpassing the previous mark of 303 (Shannon Gilroy). She rounded out her performance with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Trombetta anchored Florida’s defensive effort against the Commodores, holding Vanderbilt to an average of 8.00 goals per game. She had the job of marking Gabby Fornia – Vanderbilt’s leading point-scorer – holding her to just one goal and one assist in the series. Trombetta also registered three groundballs and two caused turnovers in the wins.

In Friday’s game, the Holbrook, N.Y. native held Fornia to one goal on just one shot, while tallying two groundballs. Trombetta then followed with another stellar performance on Sunday, holding Fornia to 0-of-1 shooting and just one assist, while picking up two groundballs and causing two turnovers.

The Gators head to Old Dominion for the final conference series of the regular season on April 23/25. Friday’s opening draw is set for 3 p.m., while Sunday’s game is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
