The 2021 MLB Draft is set to kick off this Sunday at 7 p.m. with Florida’s Jud Fabian<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14217&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=mqr7GADFCxDQzvWAo3qfMJUENXpCvJouRLuhYku2nwo&e= > looking to become the highest-drafted Gators outfielder in program history.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – With the 2021 MLB Draft set to take place from July 11-13 of next week, a handful of current Florida student-athletes are days away from realizing their lifelong goals of being selected by a professional franchise. Several Gators are also aiming to etch their names among the highest draft picks at their respective positions in program history, such as outfielder Jud Fabian<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14217&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=mqr7GADFCxDQzvWAo3qfMJUENXpCvJouRLuhYku2nwo&e= >, who could quite possibly become the highest-drafted outfielder the Gators have ever produced in the MLB Draft.

Dating back to the inaugural year of the MLB Draft in 1965, Florida has seen 205 individuals combine for 233 draft selections, including 16 first round picks (22 counting the draft’s secondary phase). Since head coach Kevin O’Sullivan<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_coaches.aspx-3Frc-3D1291&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=HxBMTByLMS4jrhvzRi7a9tAmpfCSSVwLbrZZDEMs_FM&e= > took the reigns of the program in 2008, Florida’s 88 MLB Draft picks and 10 first round selections each rank second in the nation. In particular, 16 Gators pitchers have heard their names called on draft day since 2008 – good for fourth-most in the country.

Among those expected to be drafted in 2021 is Fabian, who would become the highest-drafted outfielder in program history should he be selected prior to 33rd overall. That is precisely where the Montreal Expos drafted Brad Wilkerson in the 1998 MLB Draft and no Florida outfielder has bested that mark in the 21 years since. Buddy Reed came closest to supplanting Wilkerson in 2016, when the San Diego Padres drafted the Finksburg, Md. native with the 48th overall pick in the second round.

Should a team select Fabian prior to 27th overall, the Ocala, Fla. native would rank among the top-10 highest draft picks in program history. That number certainly seems attainable, as MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo predicted Fabian to go 22nd overall to the Chicago White Sox in his most recent mock<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.mlb.com_news_mlb-2Dmock-2Ddraft-2Djune-2D30-2D2021&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=LMk62BYJxoic7zww2qyGnVc6RXSlc2eL3zEmC2jpBZk&e= >, while Mike Axisa of CBS Sports projects Fabian to land with the Chicago Cubs<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.cbssports.com_mlb_news_2021-2Dmlb-2Dmock-2Ddraft-2Dpirates-2Dtake-2Dprep-2Dshortstop-2Dno-2D1-2Dvandys-2Dkumar-2Drocker-2Dand-2Djack-2Dleiter-2Dgo-2Din-2Dtop-2D10_&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=npOIrgoYSriClWjRt64US5Q-Z_1Eh-GfcnHNkWRtIcE&e= > at 21st overall.

Fabian is joined by right-handed pitcher Tommy Mace<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14223&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=4scrbHInAYzpxuo_yDLNOJTl0E2t_i96KJAf-Je2EoU&e= > as a first round hopeful, as Florida aims to produce multiple first round draft picks for the first time since churning out three in 2018 (Jonathan India, Brady Singer and Jackson Kowar). Mace will need to be drafted within the first 36 picks to be considered a first rounder and within the first 31 picks to etch his name as one of the top-10 highest-drafted pitchers in program history.

Catcher Nathan Hickey<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14220&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=zOCPLCl1TGrBhk5AvThW8Qf_Jwk5foLAAGHpK0IVJdo&e= > is also looking to cement his name in Gator lore, as being drafted prior to 131st overall would make the Florida backstop the third-highest catcher to be drafted in the history of the program. Only 2021 MLB All-Star Mike Zunino (third overall in 2012) and Marc Sullivan (52nd overall in 1979) had their names called earlier in the draft, with 2014 draftee Taylor Gushue rounding out the top three as the 131st overall selection.

Right-handed pitcher Jack Leftwich<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14221&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=ozITZoKKw85VCQ4pBzjti8LNWAx4jYa3tNjxNVutRoE&e= > appears likely to be drafted within the first two days of the event as well after leading the Gators with a 3.36 ERA and five saves this past season. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Christian Scott<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14231&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=YYWKLzAxGrBBIock8IdAqULDBP6Fke9IShvnNIiOER0&e= >, right-handed pitcher Franco Aleman<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14238&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=h8O8CQgGBD2mTKRGFGDuYqSk5j0k8ghRewQqZeUrV8o&e= >, outfielder Jacob Young<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14236&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=fRcJooKGAVG2Tx1vYGbA0sq8G5kg7AWHOPzjXZ-901I&e= > and right-handed pitcher Ben Specht<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14232&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=yGp2Fruv06dGOCWlsf6g4ujAm95qZ7-9ZX-humlEAbc&s=TeUpxP-4_Y67JDKRRCwXIPcTZYSWvRbf83kWoqAhv5g&e= > were each ranked inside Baseball America’s top-500 prospects for the 2021 MLB Draft.
