UAB Women’s Soccer Spotlight: Rachel Green

BIRMINGHAM – Over 2,100 miles separate former UAB midfielder Rachel Green from her hometown of Peachtree City, Ga. to her current residence in Newport Beach, Calif. Green, who was a 2017 Conference USA First-Team All Academic and a Second-Team selection and C-USA Academic Medal recipient has had a successful career since graduating from UAB in 2018. UABSports.com had a chance to reconnect with Green to talk about her transition from the field to the world of finance.

Fill us in on what you have been doing since you graduated in the Spring of 2018.
My major was in industrial distribution – I was unsure what I wanted to do after college, so I tried to become specialized. I was seeking a medical device sales position, but then I decided to go with finance. After I graduated, I knew I wanted a big change. All my life I’ve been in the southeast, growing up near Atlanta and going to school in Birmingham.

I interviewed for a Business Development Specialist position with TD Ameritrade out in San Diego, got the job and moved out west a month after graduation.

In March 2019, I completed a rigorous year long training program to become licensed with my Series 7/Series 66. Then I moved to Irvine where I began my career as a financial consultant.

After 14 months, there was a financial consultant opportunity at a Fidelity Investments in Newport Beach, which is where I have been for the last eight months.

How did your time at UAB prepare you for life after college?
The thing that I got most out of UAB – more than the studies and classes – was life skills. My senior season I got to be a captain under Erica, who is fantastic. She taught me a lot about leadership. All of these skills are transferrable in the workplace.

The position I have now, I see the similarities from when I was playing college soccer – having organization skills and being a hard worker in order to succeed. There are a lot of metrics I have to keep up with, which ties into the sense of accountability I learned at UAB. These are things that have better prepared me for my career.

Are you playing any soccer now?
I played in a couple of leagues in San Diego and I’d like to start playing again, but with the shutdown that has been put on pause – but I definitely would like to play again.

What do you miss the most about UAB?
The camaraderie – knowing you get to see your friends and teammates every day. We were such a close-knit group, I definitely miss my teammates more than anything.
