UAB Women’s Soccer Draws with UTSA 1-1

SAN ANTONIO – UAB and UTSA battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio. By earning the point tonight, the Blazers (5-8-3, 3-3-1) have clinched a berth in the Conference USA Championship.

The Roadrunners got on the board early. In the 2nd minute, Alissa Stewart scored on an assist by Ellis Patterson and Sarina Russ. However, in 2nd minute of the 2nd half, Lexxe Lipsey found a breaking Morgan Halliwill on the right side for the equalizer.

In the 50th minute, Halliwill had a chance for the go-ahead goal, but her shot hit off the right post. In the 2nd half, the Blazers outshot the Roadrunners 5-1.

Izelle Barriere had UAB’s only shot in the extra periods.

For the match, UTSA had a slight advantage on the shots, 8-7. The Roadrunners had four on target to the Blazers three. Halliwill and Lizzie Hill led UAB with a pair of shots each. UAB keeper Eve Beyer made three saves.

“I’m really proud of the girls tonight. Away games are always a challenge,” said head coach Erica Demers. “They could have given up after the first goal 1:25 in, but they didn’t. And I will always praise this group for that. The character of this team is to work hard for everything.”

The Blazers close out regular season play at home against UTEP Oct. 28. This will be Senior Night as Audria WoodBetsy OrnelasLucy ThrasherBrenda Bishop and Lexxe Lipsey will be honored in a prematch ceremony.

The Miners (4-11-0, 1-6-0) fell to Southern Miss tonight 2-0.
