UAB Women’s Soccer Defeats Mercer 2-1 in Spring Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM – Lexxe Lipsey scored in the 39th minute and Stella Kiss added the game-winner in the 49th minute as UAB defeated Mercer 2-1 at BBVA Field on Sunday afternoon. The match was the home spring season home opener.

Anika Toth made a pair of saves in net for the Blazers (2-2-0)

Lipsey got the Blazers on the board when her blast from 30 yards out went over the outstretched arm of Bears’ keeper Jordyn Ebert finding the left corner of the net.

With UAB on a counterattack, a shot by Sarah Buse was turned aside by Ebert. Kiss trailed the play and was there for the rebound inside the box for the goal putting UAB ahead 2-0.

Aliah Kitchens’ goal in the 72nd minute drew the Bears’ within one goal, but the Blazers’ defense clamped down and did not allow a Mercer shot the rest of the match.

UAB outshot Mercer 16-6, with nine of those on target. The Blazers controlled possession for 60% of the match.

UAB is off until Feb. 14 when it hosts North Alabama at BBVA Field. Kickoff is 5 p.m. Note that the match against ULM scheduled for Feb. 11 has been canceled.
