UAB Women’s Basketball to Face UTSA in San Antonio Saturday Afternoon

BIRMIGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team heads to UTSA to take on the Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas.

UAB (17-10, 9-6 C-USA) looks to bounce back from the loss to Rice last Saturday and finish the final stretch of regular season games on a high note. It has been a battle for the Blazers who have faced a difficult schedule as of late playing Rice and Middle Tennessee twice in the last five games.

The Blazers have not won back-to-back games since last defeating UTSA and UTEP at home on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. The Green and Gold are still in the hunt for a top four finish in league play, which would solidify a first-round bye in the conference tournament later in March.

UTSA (6-20, 2-13 C-USA) is riding a 12-game losing skid dating back to Jan. 11 in a loss at Southern Miss. The Roadrunners’ last win came against Louisiana Tech on Jan. 9, as UTSA got off to a 2-1 start in league play before dropping the next dozen games.

The Roadrunners are a young team with eight freshmen on the roster. A pair of rookies look to be stars in the making as Mikayla Woods and Adryana Quezada are the top two leading scorers for the youthful squad. Woods 15.0 points and 56 steals are best on the team and her 50 assists rank second. Quezada leads the team in rebounds with 6.1 and is second in scoring averaging 13.5 points per game.

Senior Timea Toth is second in C-USA in blocks with 42 on the season, an average of 1.6 per game. Toth also has 32 steals and 42 assists this season for UTSA.

“Every game at this point is important, it does not matter who you are playing,” said head coach Randy Norton. “It is that time of the season where we want to be playing our best basketball and finish the regular season strong to gain some momentum going into postseason.”

The two teams met back in January as UAB dominated the Roadrunners with a 39-point victory, 94-55 at home in Bartow Arena. Five Blazers scored in double figures led by Miyah Barnes 16, followed by a season high 15 from Lea Kerstein, 12 from Rachael Childress and 11 apiece from Trista Magee and Imani Johnson. UAB knocked down a season high 16 triples in the game including four each from Childress and Kerstein.
