UAB Women’s Basketball Hosts Southern Miss for Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team will close out the regular season at home against Southern Miss Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bartow Arena for Senior Day.

UAB (19-10, 11-6 C-USA) looks for its third straight 20-win season after a thrilling last second overtime victory on Thursday night in Norfolk, Va. Lea Kerstein played hero hitting the game winning three with 0.4 seconds left in overtime to defeat the conference leading Monarchs. The Blazers are aiming to finish in the top five in league standings heading into the C-USA Tournament next week in Frisco, Texas. 

UAB will honor six seniors following Saturday’s game. Point guard Miyah Barnes, shooting guards Rachael Childress, Trista Magee, and Lea Kerstein and forwards Imani Johnson and Angela Vendrell. 

Southern Miss (15-13, 7-10 C-USA) has won four of its last six games after seven straight losses from Jan. 18 to Feb. 8. The Golden Eagles sit at eighth in C-USA standings at 7-10, tied with Marshall and one game back from UTEP. 

The Golden Eagles are led by senior duo Shonte Hailes and Respect Leaphart. Hailes leads Southern Miss with 16.1 points while Leaphart is right behind her with 14.7 points. Leaphart also leads the team in rebounds with 6.3 boards per game. 

Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. with Senior Day festivities following the conclusion of the game.
