BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team concluded the 2022-23 regular season with an 83-75 victory over Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (13-16, 5-15 C-USA) had four players in double-digit scoring. Denim DeShields had a team-high 17-points, Destinee McGhee and Emily Klaczek each had 16 and Maria Roters 15. Margaret Whitley pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
The 49ers (11-18, 7-13 C-USA) were led by Dazia Lawrence with 25 points and Keanna Rembert with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tracey Hueston added 17 points for Charlotte, who has dropped six straight.
Although UAB led wire-to-wire, the 49ers made it interesting in the final quarter. The Blazers built an 18-point halftime lead, 42-24 and grew it to 23-points, 61-38, at the 2:39 mark of the 3rd quarter. A 30-12 run got the 49ers within five points at 73-68 with 2:27 remaining. However, Klaczek answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession and Whitley hit a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining to close out the contest.
Up next is the 2023 Conference USA Championship in Frisco, Texas. The Blazers will play on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. Their opponent and game time will be determined at the conclusion of the today’s C-USA contests.
GAME NOTES
- Klaczek’s 3-pointer at 1:53 of the 4th quarter was her 500th of her career
- DeShields had a career-best four 3-pointers
- Before fouling out, Roters had a perfect game, going 4-for-4 from the field and 6-for-6 from the line
- UAB’s 83 points was the most since it scored 89 against FIU on Jan. 7
- The Blazers took a season-high 41 3-point attempts
