UAB WBB Recap: Daniels’ Career-High Leads UAB Over Mississippi Valley State 76-62

BIRMINGHAM – Caitlynn Daniels scored a career-high 28 points including a personal-best eight 3-pointers and Zakyia Weathersby recorded a double-double of 20 points and 18 rebounds along with six blocks in UAB’s 76-62 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Friday afternoon.

Head coach Randy Norton recorded his 150th career victory while Maria Roters added nine rebounds and Margaret Whitley six assists for the Blazers (3-0).

Zakiya Mahoney led the Delta Devilettes (0-2) with 23 points.

The 1st quarter saw five ties and five lead changes. MVSU’s Kerrigan Johnson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 18-18 after the first 10 minutes.

Daniels opened the 2nd quarter with a 3-pointer sparking a 12-0 run in the first 3:36 that put the Blazers up 30-18. A pair of free throws from Lindsey Dullard made the score 40-26 and gave UAB its largest advantage of the half at 14 points. The Blazers’ halftime lead was 41-30.

UAB got the first three field goals of the 3rd quarter and Daniels’ fifth 3-pointer of the contest put the Blazers ahead 48-32. A Roters layup gave UAB its largest lead of the game at 17 points when her fast break basket made the score 52-35.

Daniels would knock down three more 3-pointers in the 4th quarter.

UAB outrebounded MVSU 54-39 and had 19 points off turnovers. The Blazers dominated the paint 28-18.

“Although we didn’t play our best today, and our girls know it, we had some outstanding performances.  Caitlynn Daniels had her best game as a UAB Blazer, it was an amazing performance,” said Norton.

“We’ll learn from today’s game and will continue to get better,” added Norton.

The Blazers will travel to California for a pair of games beginning with San Diego State on Nov. 22 followed by Pepperdine on Nov. 24. The next home contest is Nov. 29 against Chattanooga.
