UAB WBB Falls to Southern Miss 67-57

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team fell to Southern Miss 67-57 in the home regular season finale at Bartow Arena on Thursday night.

Zakyia Weathersby recorded her 20^th double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Emily Klaczek and Margaret Whitley each scored 10 points for the Blazers (15-13, 8-9 C-USA).

USM’s Daishai Almond led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Domonique Davis added 15 for the Lady Eagles (17-10, 9-7 C-USA).

The 1^st quarter had three ties and three lead changes. With Southern Miss ahead 12-8, UAB ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to make the score 16-14 after the first 10 minutes.

Weathersby opened the 2^nd quarter with a jumper, but the Lady Eagles would go on a 12-0 run to make the score 26-18 at the 3:49 mark. USM would not trail the rest of the way.

The Blazers tied the game at 37-37 with 6:05 left in the 3^rd quarter. Southern Miss would score the next seven points and would keep it a two-possession game until Weathersby opened the 4^th quarter with a jumper to cut the deficit to three points at 50-47.

UAB would get within a basket at 4:31 and only trail by four with 1:41 remaining, but USM would score the final six points of game.

“We don’t have time to dwell on tonight’s game. We must regroup and get ready to play LA Tech,” said head coach Randy Norton.

The regular season closes out in Ruston against LA Tech on Mar. 5. The Lady Techsters (18-10, 10-7 C-USA) are atop the West Division.
