UAB Softball Drops Two on Day Two of Snowman Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament

STARKVILLE, Miss. – It was a tough day on the field for UAB softball (9-10) as the Blazers dropped both games on day two of the Snowman Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament in Starkville, Miss.

The Green and Gold fell first in a heartbreaking loss to UT Martin (12-7) before dropping game two to host (RV) Mississippi State (15-3).

A seventh inning rally lifted UT Martin over UAB in the first game of the day as the Skyhawks put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win. 

The Skyhawks threatened in the second inning but Amy Woodham worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game scoreless. 

UAB struck first in the bottom of the third with a two RBI single from Sierra Frazier that scored Jenna Olszewski and KK Crocker who reached base on a fielder’s choice and a single.

Neither team could push across any runs until UT Martin rallied back in the top of the seventh plating three runs. The first Skyhawk runner reached base on an error and was moved to second on a fielder’s choice. Paige Clark singled down the right field line allowing one run to score then Kaitlyn Kelly hit a bases clearing double to make it 3-2 in favor of the Skyhawks.

The Blazers went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to move to 9-9 on the season.

MISSISSIPPI STATE 5, UAB 0

The Blazers were held to just two hits by Mississippi State’s Emily Williams who pitched seven scoreless innings for the Bulldogs fanning eight batters. Jaycee Cook recorded her first loss of the season in the circle for UAB giving up eight hits and five runs in three innings of work. 

Mississippi State scored early, plating one run in the bottom of the first on a single from Carter Spexarth that scored Candice Denis.

The Bulldogs added two more in the third as Chloe Malau’ulu and Madisyn Kennedy each recorded RBI for Mississippi State. 

Woodham came in the game in the fourth inning in relief of Cook. A double from Denis scored Montana Davidson to make it 4-0 in favor of the home team. 

Mississippi State added one more in the fifth via a sac fly to left field with the bases loaded.  

The Blazers will wrap up the Snowman Sunday morning at 10 a.m. when they face UT Martin at Nusz Park.
