UAB Men’s Basketball Visits North Texas

BIRMINGHAM – UAB (19-6, 11-5 C-USA) heads to Denton for its second of three consecutive trips to the state of Texas. The Blazers will take on North Texas (13-7, 9-3 C-USA) on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

UAB LATELY
UAB is coming off an 1-1 series at UTSA. The Blazers took the first game 64-57 behind Quan Jackson’s 19 points. Jalen Benjamin tied his season-high with 21 points the following day. The Blazers are 4-4 on the road this season.

UNT LATELY
North Texas is coming off a split at Marshall. The Mean Green are 8-1 at home the season, their only loss coming against LA Tech on Feb. 5. Javion Hamlet leads UNT with 13.3 points per game and is coming off a Marshall series where he scored 38 points, 28 of those came on Feb. 27.

UAB AND UNT HISTORY     
The series began in 1997 when the Blazers defeated the Mean Green in a non-conference matchup at Bartow Arena by the score of 79-73. The teams did not meet again until North Texas joined Conference USA prior to the 2013-14 season. UAB has won the last two matchups at the Super Pit by a combined five points. In 2017, HaHa Lee’s free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining gave the Blazers a 54-52 win. In 2019, UAB closed the game out on a 13-5 run to earn a 52-49 victory.

COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and North Texas have five common opponents this season: Louisiana Tech, Rice, Southern Miss, UTSA and UTEP. The Mean Green’s series against Old Dominion was canceled.

GOING FOR WIN 20
UAB is going for its 20th win in 26 games. Only four teams have accomplished that feat faster. The 2015-16 squad recorded its 20th win in 24 games and the 1981-82, 2005-06 and 2009-10 teams did it in 25 games.

D-ING UP
In addition to being sixth in the nation in scoring defense (60.5), the Blazers are second in turnover margin (6.2) and 17th in scoring margin (+13.2)


UP NEXT
This is the final series of the regular season before the 2021 Air Force Reserve C-USA Basketball Championships held in Frisco, Texas held Mar. 9-13. The brackets for the tournament, including seeds and tipoff times, will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season on Saturday, March 6.
