UAB Heads to Mississippi to Face Alcorn State

BIRMINGHAM – Coming off a disappointing result at rival Memphis the UAB women’s basketball team is on the road again to face Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon in Lorman, Miss.

UAB (5-3) was averaging 80 points a game until Memphis held the Blazers to just 52 points last Sunday. The Green and Gold struggled to match the Tiger’s physicality which snapped UAB’s four game win streak. The Blazers will go up against an Alcorn State team that is averaging just 58.3 points a game.

Rachael Childress reached a major career milestone in the loss against Memphis as she became Conference USA’s all-time three-point shooter with 339 career threes. The senior leads the conference in threes per game this year averaging 3.4 triples.

Alcorn State (4-6) is looking for its second win in a row and first win over UAB. Senior guard Jada Hargrove leads the Braves in almost every statistical category. She is first in points per game (12.0), rebounds per game (3.9), assists (26) and steals (28). The Braves lead the nation in steals (158) and steals per game (15.8) while Hargrove sits at 19th in the country in steals and 39th in steals per game. Three different Braves have 20+ steals on the season: Hargrove, LaRae Roscoe and Diamond Hall.

“Alcorn State is an outstanding defensive team and will press us for 40 minutes,” said head coach Randy Norton. “They do a great job of crashing the offensive boards. The keys for our team will be taking care of the ball and keeping them off the glass.”

The Blazers and Braves have met on four previous occasions with UAB leading the series 4-0. The last meeting came in November of 2018 when the Blazers defeated Alcorn State 80-53 in Birmingham. Childress put up 17 points with five made threes in that game. Trista Magee recorded her then career high 15 points with eight rebounds, one block and one steal.

This marks the first time the two teams have played each other at Alcorn State. Three of the previous four meetings have been held in Birmingham with the first meeting in 2003 coming at a neutral site.
