UAB faces Louisiana Tech in Ruston

RUSTON, La. – After picking up its first road conference win of the season UAB travels to Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech Saturday afternoon.

UAB (12-7, 4-3 C-USA) is finding its groove winning three straight conference games to move into a tie for fourth place in C-USA. In those three games the Blazers have averaged 79.0 points while holding opponents to 66.3 and forcing 15.0 turnovers per game. 

Rachael Childress is averaging 19.0 points off 50.0 percent shooting from the field and 51.7 percent from three in the last three games. Miyah Barnes is averaging 17.7 points off 50.0 percent shooting including a 20-point performance against Southern Miss. Zakyia Weathersby has been big for the Blazers off the bench averaging 12.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in the last three wins. 

Louisiana Tech (10-7, 2-4 C-USA) is coming off a big conference win against Middle Tennessee on Thursday after a rough start to league play. Four Lady Techsters scored in double figures in the win with Keiunna Walker and Grayson Bright each scoring 16 while Amber Dixon and Raizel Guinto added 15 points. LA Tech shot 60 percent from three in the win as Guinto recorded five triples and Bright went 3-3 from behind the arc. 

The Lady Techsters average 70.0 points which is fourth best in C-USA. Walker leads the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game, she was named Co-Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 13 after averaging 24.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals in two games. 

“LA Tech is coming off a big win over Middle Tennesee and have been playing some great basketball as of late,” said head coach Randy Norton. “We are excited for another opportunity to compete and try to play our best basketball as we close out this road trip.”

The Blazers and Lady Techsters have met nine times with the first meeting coming in 2014 after LA Tech joined C-USA. UAB holds a narrow 5-4 series lead but is 4-1 on the road against Louisiana Tech including the most recent meeting in March of 2019 when the Blazers won 95-69 in Ruston. Three different Blazers scored 20+ points in that game including 22 from Childress who made six triples.
