More homeowners to lose their policies

From David Volz

If you live in an older home and need  a homeowners insurance policy, good luck in finding one or keeping one. The Florida Office Insurance Regulation just allowed the terminations of home owners policies from three major home insurers. These companies have suffered major financial losses. Universal Insurance of North America will cut 13,274 policies. Gulfstream Property and Casualty will cancel 20,311 policies and Southern Fidelity will cancel 19,600 policies. Most of not all of the affected homeowners will have to get their next policy from Citizens Property Insurance, considered an insurer of last resort. The reasons insurance companies give for losing huge amounts of money include inflated damages, litigation and fraud. Most of the cancellations will take place Broward, Miami Dade and Palm Beach counties. Florida legislators are concerned that if a major hurricane would hit Florida, Citizens Property Insurance would take a huge hit and it might be hard to find the money to pay off all the claims.

Notes on gambling situation

If you like casino and other forms of gambling, you will have many more opportunities to enjoy it in Florida. The Florida Legislature is now about to vote on approving a 30-year gambling pact that has been signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Sports betting will be permitted but it will go through the Seminole Tribe.  Three new casinos could be built at the Seminole Tribe’s Hollywood reservation which is where the Seminole Hard Rock Casino and the guitar shaped hotel is located. This deal could deliver about $500 million annually to the State of Florida which might be used for education, affordable housing, the environment and other priorities of the Legislature. It is expected that the Republican Legislature will approve with deal. Also, under this new arrangement, pari-mutual card rooms could offer designated player games without violating gambling regulations.

Florida Senate approves gambling pact

From David Volz

The Florida Senate just voted 38 to 1 in favor of  the gambling pact with the Seminole Tribe and bringing sports betting to Florida. The Seminole Tribe will control sports betting in Florida and be able to offer craps and roulette at its casinos in Florida under the 30 year deal. Three new casinos could be built at its reservation in Hollywood. The Seminoles will pay the State of Florida $500 annually because of this deal and the money could used for education, affordable housing and other items. Next it will go  to the Florida House and then to the federal government for its approval. If it passes and it appears likely to do so, legal sports gambling for people age 21 and up could begin on October 15.
