Sports gambling is stopped in Florida

The deal that provided the Seminole Tribe a monopoly on all sports better in Florida was thrown out by a federal district court judge. Judge Dabney Friedrich ruled that the sports gambling deal, which began in Florida on November 1, violated the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. This requires that state approved gambling must happen on tribal land.

At a recent news conference, Governor Ron DeSantis said this ruling was not a surprise. He said that other areas of the gaming deal he negotiated with the Seminole Tribe remain in effect. DeSantis said he believed this was a possibility.

The agreement between the State of Florida and the tribe allowed bets to be placed through electronic devices when bettors are in Florida but not on tribal lands, according to Friedrich. This ruling halts sports betting in Florida.

Friedrich said that State of Florida and the Seminole Tribe could agree to a new compact which allows online gambling only on Indian lands.
