Gov. DeSantis names two Broward Commissioners

Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Torey Alston and Jared Moskowitz to the Broward County Commission on November 23.

Moskowitz, of Parkland will serve in District 8. He was the Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. During the pandemic he led the vaccination distribution effort and worked to make sure front-line workers had masks. He also served for six years in the Florida House of Representatives and six years on the Parkland Commission. He was General Counsel at AshBritt. Moskowitz is a Democrat and was a leader in the effort to make texting while driving illegal.

Moskowitz believes Broward County offers many opportunities to businesses and families. He promised to work to make the County even better. He realizes the lack of affordable housing is a problem and hopes to work on programs to housing for all families more affordable. He also wants to continue work on school safety.

Alston, of Fort Lauderdale is Chief of Staff at the Florida Department of Transportation. He will serve in District 9. He has also served as the chief of staff for Broward Commissioner Barbara Sharief. He and held positions in the Miami Dade County Public Schools, the City of Gainesville and the Florida Department of Management Services. Alston is a Republican. During the meeting where he was presented as a soon be to commissioner he said, “Wow, God is so good.”  Alston said he is eager to get to work.

Alston wants to work bringing more jobs to Broward County and to make housing more affordable. He wants to develop programs for families and individuals who need housing.

Moskowitz and Alston will be replacing Barbara Sharief, who resigned to run for Congress and Dale Holness who also resigned to run for Congress. Both were defeated in the Democratic primary election. They had to submit and irrevocable resignation to run for Congress.

“Torey Alston and Jared Moskowitz are both Broward County natives with demonstrated records of service to the community and proven ability to work across party lines to things done,” said DeSantis. “I expect both to bring sane, rational leadership to the commission and look forward to working with them.”

Moskowitz earned his bachelor’s degree from George Washington University and his juris doctor from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center. His term in District 8 runs through November 2022.

Alston earned his bachelor’s degree and Master of Business Administration degree from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. His term in District 9 runs through November 2024.
