Rincones Selected in Round Three of MLB Draft

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Philadelphia Phillies selected Florida Atlantic University sophomore outfielder Gabriel Rincones, Jr. with the 14th pick of the third round (No. 93 overall) in Monday’s Major League Baseball amateur draft. With only the exception of the shortened five-round 2020 draft, this marks at least one Owl being drafted in 16 of the last 17 seasons.

Rincones was drafted in the 19th round by San Diego in 2021 but decided a year at FAU was the better route. The native of Glenrothes, Scotland made the most of his time in Paradise, leading the Owls with 19 home runs and 69 RBI. He was named to the Conference USA First Team All-Conference and was voted as the C-USA Newcomer of the Year.

13 former Owls are currently a part of a Major League franchise. Rincones is the 102nd FAU player to be drafted all-time and sixth highest pick in program history:

  • C.J. Chatham, 2016 (51st overall)
  • Tyler Frank, 2018 (56th overall)
  • Jeff Fiorentino, 2004 (79th overall)
  • Tommy Murphy, 2000 (80th overall)
  • Billy Brown, 1997 (89th overall)

The 2022 draft continues Tuesday with rounds 11-20 starting at 2 pm ET on mlb.com/draft/2022.
