REVIEWING WEEK ONE OF THE 2020 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON

Dear Readers,

We had a great week one of this current season and will look to have a great week two of this year.

I hope all people who have an official vote for national awards really took note of a lot of players such as UCLA TE Greg Dulcich, Illinois P Blake Hayes, Iowa State LB Mike Rose, Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer, and more to name for their performances in wins over their respective opponents.
I had a hard time deciding the placement of this week’s Weekly Heisman Trophy Ballot. Mississippi QB Matt Coral was considered for his performance in that neutral-site win (in Atlanta, GA) over Louisville but I want to see what he has against upcoming SEC competition. UCF QB Dillon Gabriel had to be selected because of the degree of difficulty he had to go through to get this win. I had to select Texas RB Bijan Robinson because I had to have an RB and he did a great job with his talents in a game that I thought was going to be very competitive but the Longhorns had their way all 60 minutes. QB Desmond Ridder showed that he is the reigning defending AAC Offensive Player of the Year but the best is really yet to come in a few weeks. I know next week, I will have five players to consider but I can only select three for my Weekly Heisman Trophy Ballot.
I found out they nicknamed this home and away series for Pittsburgh and Tennessee The Johnny Majors Classic. This year will be in Knoxville and next year in downtown Pittsburgh (for the first time in series history-FINALLY). Past Head Coach Jackie Sherill will be the honorary captain for the Pitt Panthers. Sherill was the head coach of that 1980 Pitt football team that had an 11-1 mark, including a road win over Majors and the Vols. I can’t count the UT Vols out but if Pittsburgh has their way all game long like they did in a home win over the UMass Minutemen, I suggest both Smoley mascots (the human in a costume and dog) better go to their locker room because it won’t be for their eyes. All two prior meetings have been held on Rocky Top and won by the Panthers. LET’S GO PITT!!!
I am not surprised that Minnesota RB Mohammad Ibrahim’s lower leg injury has ended his 2021 senior season. He had over 130 rushing yards against Ohio State before leaving that game. What’s next for his future? I believe the Golden Gophers will finish lower than fourth  place in the Big Ten West Division.
Sincerely, RICH

OTHER TEAMS TO MENTION (OTM):Clemson (2), Oklahoma State, Coastal Carolina, and Texas

RANKINGS ANALYSIS:

What a wild first week to kick off the 2021 college football season and there is a shake-up in my top ten rankings…No surprise that Alabama defeated Miami, who I had among my OTMs conivingly,44-13 in a neutral-site game at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA.. I really thought the Hurricanes had enough talent to take on the Crimson Tide, who had new starters on offense and who had good enough WRs to take on that tough DBs corp. As you saw the final score, I WAS WRONG!  Also, I really thought Miami had good enough DBs to take on those younger WRs but it showed how reloadable this Alabama football team really is when they lose a lot of key players-especially those with tough cleats to fill. That losing performance from the ‘Canes forced them out of my OTMs. The Tide has a home-opening game against Mercer this SAT (4 PM, SECN)….Georgia moved up from #5 to #2 after that 10-3 neutral-site win (in Charlotte, N.C) over Clemson, who was #2 in my preseason rankings, in what was an all-defensive football game. I will keep Clemson among my OTMs because the Tigers will win out before the ACC Championship Game against who knows. Offenses better start picking their game up. The Bulldogs will have a home-opening game against UAB this SAT (3:30 PM, ESPN 2) while The Tigers have a home-opening game against South Carolina State (aka S.C State)…Oklahoma is lucky to remain at #4 and Notre Dame is lucky to move up from #7 to #9. Both of them played pathetic in the 4th quarter. They didn’t answer back when their opponents scored after having an 18-point lead. The Sooners stopped Tulane a half-yard short of the 1st down marker on a 4th down play, got that ball back and ran out the rest of the game clock. The Fighting Irish ended up going into OT (aka extra innings) with a 38-all tie. The FSU Seminoles outplayed N-D and missed a FG in the 1st OT period, which opened the door for N-D to win that game. If both teams can’t cover the spread, I may have to rank these teams lower than what they are ranked. Oklahoma will have a home game against Western Carolina this SAT (7 PM, Bally Sports) while Notre Dame has a home-opening game against Toledo (Peacock, 2:30 PM)…Cincinnati will keep winning and winning until some road trips into the state of IN. The UC Bearcats did a number on their rival Miami (OH) in a 49-35 home-opening win over the Redhawks. Cincy continues to make a statement. Cincinnati will have a home game against Murray State (3:30 PM, ESPN Plus), which will be a breeze for the Bearcats…USC moved up from #6 to #8 in my rankings. The Trojans showed why they are the defending Pac-12 South Division Champions and heavily favored to repeat as division champions in a 30-7 home win over San Jose State. The Trojans have a home game against upset-minded Stanford (10:30 PM, FOX). Better be willing to stay up late for this one…The biggest game this weekend is Iowa at Iowa State this SAT (4:30 PM, ABC). The Hawkeyes moved up out of nowhere to move into my top ten rankings after a convincing 34-6 home win over Indiana, who was overrated somewhere between #15-20 in the major polls. The Cyclones hung on to have a 16-10 home win over Northern Iowa. The Cyclone nation should thank their lucky stars that All-Big 12 LB Mike Rose decided to stay one more year than go pro because he made that game-winning solo tackle to win this game. The only reason I have Iowa ranked ahead of Iowa State is because the Hawkeyes are on a current five-game winning streak over their little brother from Ames. The Cyclones may be loaded with talent but I can’t count those Hawks out. ESPN College Gameday will be there for this game… Penn State is on a current five-game winning streak, including a 16-10 road win over Wisconsin this past SAT. I knew this game was gonna be good but I thought the Badgers were going to beat the Nittany Lions. Penn State is apparently reborn after a disappointing 4-5 mark from last season. The Nittany Lions will have a home-opening game against defending MAC Champions Ball State this SAT (3:30 PM, FS1)…Coastal Carolina, who is among my OTMs, is coming off a 52-14 home win over The Citadel. The Chanticleers have more than 20 starters coming back from last season as the defending SBC East Division Champions. Coastal Carolina will have a home game against Kansas this FRI (7:30 PM, ESPN 2)… Oklahoma State better get their act together after a 23-16 home-opening win over Missouri State. I thought the OSU Cowboys were going to blow the Bears out. Okie State has a home game against Tulsa this SAT (Noon, FS1)…Texas looked impressive in their 38-18 home-opening win over Louisiana. I really thought that game was going to be very competitive. Coach Sark got his first win since once again becoming a head coach in the college ranks. The Longhorns have a home game against past SWC rival Arkansas this SAT (7 PM, ESPN)…North Carolina fell out of my top ten rankings. The Tar Heels were ranked #10 before a 17-10 road loss against Virginia Tech. QB Sam Howell really needed WR Beau Corrales for this game. North Carolina will regroup for a home-opening game against Georgia State this SAT (7:30 PM)… The winner of the Utah at BYU game this SAT (10:15 PM, ESPN) could be among my OTMs after this weekend… I can’t wait for this SAT!!!!
