Owls set for road test Monday at Miami

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Owls have a short turnaround this week as they head down I-95 for their first road trip of the season to take on the Miami Hurricanes for a midweek matchup on Monday, Aug. 28 for a 6 p.m. first serve inside the Knight Complex.

SCOUTING FAU

  • The Owls went 2-1 during their season-opening weekend at the FAU Invitational.
  • On Friday, Florida Atlantic earned their first sweep of the season against Holy Cross, 3-0, before falling just short in a four-set battle against Kansas City, 1-3.
  • The Owls then closed out the weekend with a four-set victory against FDU, 3-1.
  • Junior Kaila Ru had a big debut weekend for the Owls and was named to the FAU Invitational All-Tournament Team after tallying a team-leading 31 kills and posting a dominant team-best .580 hitting percentage over the Owls’ first three games of the season.
  • Ru is also tied for the team-lead in blocks, recording six, including two solo blocks during the Owls’ FAU Invitational.
  • Sophomore Madison Dyer and Junior Katelynn Robine also had impressive season-opening weekends, recording 24 kills and 22 kills, respectively.
  • Victoria Hensley and Noelle Stephens lead the Owls in assists, posting 85 and 49 assists, respectively.
  • Defensively, Isabelle Northam leads the Owls’ backline, recording a team-leading 52 digs (4.73 per set) through three games.

SCOUTING MIAMI

  • Miami is 2-0 so far this season, earning wins over Maryland, 3-1, and FIU, 3-0.
  • The Hurricanes are led offensively by Peyman Yardimci with a team-leading 28 kills. averaging 4.0 per set and hitting .480 through the team’s two contests.
  • Flormarie Heredia Colon posted a team second-best 16 kills and a .163 hitting percentage.
  • The Hurricanes offense runs through Savannah Vach, who holds a team-leading 46 assists, averaging 11.50 per set.
  • Defensively, Milana Moisio leads the Hurricanes in digs with 19, averaging 2.71 per set, while Angela Grieve ranks second on the team with 16, posting 4.0 per set.
  • Janice Leao and Peyman Yardimci both posted a team-leading five blocks during the Canes first two contests.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Miami holds an all-time 12-1 lead over the Owls. Florida Atlantic has yet to win in Coral Gables, dropping all six of their contests at Miami, and are on a 12-game losing streak against the Canes. The Owls last defeated the Canes on Sept. 18, 2001, in Boca Raton, earning a 3-0 sweep.

UP NEXT

  • The Owls will remain on the road next weekend as they travel to Oxford, Ohio to compete in the Miami/Best Western Invitational on Sept. 1-2.
