Oakland Park building the Sky Building, City Hall, and approves Mileage Rate

Oakland Park is working to build the Sky Building

The City of Oakland Park is working with NRI on a Public Private Partnership to construct the Sky Building on the west side of Dixie Highway, which will house the new City Hall along with 140 residential units and 16,000 feet of commercial space. When City Hall relocates, the six acre site of the current location will be available for redevelopment. The City is looking for the right partner to redevelop the land to create an active and vibrant downtown.

Also, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) has awarded the City of Oakland Park $50,000 for phase two of an Affordable Housing Study. As more people move to Oakland Park, there is a greater demand for housing, which is leading to higher living costs. The City is working to to ensure there is a range of affordable housing options for all residents in our community. In 2020 Oakland Park worked with a consultant to understand ways to address affordable housing and challenges facing local governments. The City will use the DEO grant funding to continue its affordable housing study, assess existing affordable housing options, and outline a strategy to implement a successful housing program

Oakland Park approves preliminary mileage rate

During the July 20 Meeting, the Oakland Park City Commission approved a preliminary decrease of the operating millage rate from 5.8910 to 5.8890 mills. This would be the lowest millage rate for Oakland Park in the last decade, and the seventh time the city has lowered the rate in the past eight years. The proposed budget for FY22 includes $27.4 million for Capital Improvement Projects and funding for more than 150 initiatives to support public safety, smart growth, infrastructure, financial stability, and parks and leisure activities. Public hearings for the FY22 budget are scheduled to take place Wednesday, Sept. 8 and  Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. A special Commission meeting for the fire, storm water, and residential solid waste assessments will take place on Monday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.

The building on the south side of 38th street will have ground floor retail stores and restaurants, City Hall and a parking garage. Oakland Park will rent space from the owner for the City Hall which will be located on the first floor and the sixth or top floor of the budling. On the first floor there will be the city hall chambers and areas where people who need to make contact with city personnel can do so. For example, a person could pay a water bill on the ground floor. On the top floor, there will be administrative offices for city staff. The parking garage will contain 340 spaces.

One the north side of 38th Street, there will be a residential building which will include 140 residential units. This building will also contain retail and restaurant space. The project will include 16,000 square feet of retail space. On the third floor there will be sky bridge to so residents can walk over the street to the parking garage. The residential building will contain amenities such as a lobby, a pool and a gymnasium for residents.

“This will be good for Oakland Park,” said Peter Schwarz, director of community and economic development for Oakland Park. “These lots of have been vacant for 15 years. This is an opportunity to create economic development and new vertical construction in the downtown area.”
