No. 19 Bulls Travel North for the St. Mary’s Spring Regatta
USF has two top-four finishes to start the spring slate

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 15, 2019 – The USF women’s sailing team competes in the top spring event thus far at this weekend’s St. Mary’s Spring Regatta in Maryland.

Of the 18 teams competing, 12 will be ranked, included USF at 19. No. 2 Yale, No. 4 Boston College, No. 5 Cornell, No. 6 Hobart, No. 7 Boston University, No. 10 College of Charleston, No. 11 Harvard, No. 12 George Washington University, No. 13 URI, No. 14 Tufts and No. 16 Navy will all be in attendance.

USF finished first at the USF Women’s Intersectional to open the year two weeks ago and now has three-straight to-five finishes dating back to the final event of October after finishing fourth at the Eckerd Intersectional March 2-3.

Nota-Bulls

  • The A division will feature sophomore Marina Barzaghi (Saunderstown, R.I.) and senior Darby Capellin (Bradenton, Fla.).
  • Sophomore Katie Bornarth (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and senior Rachel Yannelli (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) will sail together in the B division.

“This is our first major regatta of the season, so we are just aiming to establish ourselves as contenders for a position in the National Championships Finals this May, which is limited to the top 18 teams in the country,” said head coach Allison Jolly.

“Our main challenge will be our small traveling roster size,” said Jolly. “We will likely be one of only two or three teams flying to the event, so we will not have extras. Teams within driving distance to the event are able to bring several additional crews to cover light wind, medium wind, and heavy wind conditions, which affords more flexibility, whereas we will have only one crew per boat.”
