NCAA Division II National Championship

Indianapolis, Ind. – Lynn University’s women’s swimming team made history on the second day of the NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship. The Fighting Knights swam the first national championship relay for the program and Sarah Hughes swam in the consolation finals for the 400 individual medley.
Hughes missed out on the championship finals by four-tenths of a second with a preliminary time of 4:23.62 to place ninth. The senior out of Southampton, England then finished seventh in the evenings consolation finals. Her top-16 finish qualifies her for All-America recognition, making her the fifth two-time All-American for Lynn’s swimming program.
Making her first NCAA national championship appearance, Samar Khacha placed 21st in the 400 IM. The sophomore Spaniard tapped the wall in 4:27.68, one second off her personal-best time.
She would cheer from the pool deck later in the day as Hughes, Laia Coma, Clara Monges and Karolina Smylek swam in the program’s first relay competition at the national championship. The Fighting Knights quartet were clocked at 3:47.54 to finish 20th, four spots back of a finals berth.
Day three looks to be a busy day for Lynn as three swimmers will compete. Catalina Berraud-Galea swims the 500 freestyle first followed by Smylek in the 100 backstroke and concluding with Hughes in the 100 breaststroke.
