FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 14 Tulane’s stifling defense led the Green Wave to a 65-52 win over No. 6 Charlotte in the second round of the 2024 American Women’s Basketball Championship Sunday, March 10 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
With the win, the Green Wave (12-19) advances to play No. 3 Temple on Monday, March 11 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
It is the first time in American Championship history the lowest seed has won its first two games.
Tulane shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) in the first half while limiting Charlotte (16-15) to just 8-of-28 shooting (28.6 percent) in the first half and only 24.6 percent for the game (16-of-65). The Green Wave led by 15 at the break, 39-24. Tulane’s lead grew as large as 22 toward the end of the third quarter.
Amira Mabry led four Green Wave players in double figures with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Kyren Whittington added 16 points, while Irina Parau recorded 13 points and seven assists.
Dazia Lawrence led Charlotte with 20 points.
