Moving Wall is coming to Coral Springs and Oakland Park to hold groundbreaking ceremony

The Moving Wall is coming to Coral Springs

From David Volz

The Moving Wall, a traveling structure created to honor and memorialize Vietnam veterans, will make a stop in Coral Springs from Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7 at Sportsplex Park.

The wall, which is a half-size replica of the permanent memorial in Washington D.C. is being sponsored by the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs. This marks the second time the Moving Wall will make its way to Coral Springs, as it was also here in 2015. Tony Bianco, President of the veterans’ coalition, and veteran of the U.S. Army, helped spearhead the initiative to bring the memorial back to Coral Springs and is excited for a new generation of residents to experience this piece of history.

“My fellow coalition members and I have been working hard to bring The Moving Wall to Coral Springs, and we’re pleased to say it’s officially coming back thanks, in part, to the support of the City of Coral Springs,” Bianco said. “A younger generation will now get to ask questions and learn more about the war that affected so many of their parents and grandparents.”

The Moving Wall has been touring the country for more than 30 years. It was founded by John Devitt who, after visiting The Vietnam Memorial, vowed to share his experience with those who may not have the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. The Moving Wall replica was built by veterans and now travels throughout the United States from April to November. Mayor Scott Brook, a strong supporter of our community veterans, is pleased to welcome The Moving Wall back to the city.

“Veterans are such an integral part of our nation’s history,” Brook said. “Just like our Hometown Heroes banner program, Coffee with a Veteran meetups, and regular military recognitions, the arrival of The Moving Wall will serve, not only as a valuable tool to educate the community, but also as a signal that Coral Springs greatly appreciates those who serve and have served our nation.”
