LIONS QB JARED GOFF QUOTE SHEET – October 3, 2023

LIONS QB JARED GOFF QUOTE SHEET
October 3, 2023
On how the team gets into rhythm with the inconsistent game schedule this season: “Yeah, it changes here and there. We’ll go through a pretty good stretch here of Sundays in a row. But yeah, it changes and not too abnormal. We’ve all played Thursday games and primetime games, so we’re good.”
On how he makes sure he takes better care of the ball following the end of his streak of 383-straight passes without an interception: “I wouldn’t blame you guys. You’ve got to be smart with it. I’ve had three, two of them were bad throws, one was a bad decision. Try to limit the decision ones. Those are the ones that really sting, but yeah, just got to take care of the ball better and really limit that is something I’m focused on.”
On what it means that the team has been able to overcome mistakes: “Yeah, means a lot, yeah. It’s a sign of a good team. I make mistakes that are – and the defense gets a stop and then we get the ball back and score. Again, I said it kind of after the game, it’s good we’re responding well. I’d like to stop having to respond well, but yeah, it’s a good sign.”
On his reaction when he found out that Lions WR Jameson Williams’s suspension was reduced: “Yeah, I was kind of confused, actually. I didn’t understand what it meant. At first, I had to kind of read into it and see what it was, but yeah, excited now. We get him back and he’ll add some stuff to our offense that we were missing a little bit. Yeah, it’s fun to have him back.”
On how they will distribute passes amongst receivers now that Lions WR Jameson Williams is able to play: “Yeah, we will. We always will. It’s not my job, but yeah, we’ll throw to the open guy and hopefully he’ll be a part of that. But yeah, he’s getting himself ready and yeah, we’ll have him in there to some extent this week and see what he can do.”
On the biggest challenge they will face with Lions WR Jameson Williams returning from his suspension and getting on the same page: “There’s really no getting on the same page with him, I don’t think. We feel – I feel good with him. It’s just getting him reps. Whenever you’re off for that long, I don’t care who you are, you just need reps to get back into it and feel the speed of it and run some plays and be on the field with all of us, but yeah that would be it. If you want to call that getting on the same page, maybe it is, but I feel good with him on really everything right now.”
On the potential the offense has now that Lions WR Jameson Williams is back and the speed he adds to the offense: “Yeah, he adds that. I think he adds a hell of a lot more than that. He can do a lot of different things, but yeah, it’s just getting him the deep throws. I’ve got to make throws in the space and we’re 3-1 and I’ve been pretty good on offense without him and hopefully he can take us to the next level but yeah, we’ve got room to move outside of him as well, which is exciting.”
On what it does for the offense when people are expecting their run game to make explosive plays: “Yeah, it’s nice to close the door and it’s really imposing your will on a defense when they know you’re going to run it, the whole stadium knows you’re going to run it and you still run it, get the first down and it’s a credit to those guys up front, our running backs. They’re doing a hell of a job finishing off games and it’s nice to finish with the ball in your hands.”
On what it means that Lions T Taylor Decker wants to play despite his injury: “Yeah, we were talking about that today. He’s such a good player that him at whatever percentage he’s at is often better than the alternative, so having him out there was really important, and I know he wishes that things went a little bit differently, but I told him, ‘Man, you battled. Like we could see it. You did your best and kept us in the game in a lot of ways,’ with what they had with (Packers LB) Rashan Gary there on his side and some of the pass rush stuff was pretty impressive by him but yeah, he gutted it out and hopefully he can be a little healthier as we go on.”
On his excitement with having a healthy offensive line this season: “Yeah, any time you can gain depth like that, it’s helpful. Yeah, and (Lions G Halapoulivaati Vaitai) V is a guy that we love to have back and see him get out there again, but I think (Lions OL) Graham (Glasgow)’s done a great job stepping in, so it’s been good to have healthy depth come back and always good to be able to get five or six, seven guys that can play out there that are healthy.”
On if the offense has a bad taste in their mouth because of their loss to Carolina last season: “Sure, yeah, I think it’s a game that we kind of weeded last year and they kind of kicked our (expletive) in some ways at their place and obviously, different coach, different players, but a lot of those guys are still there and yeah, we’d like to get our chance back now and I know they’re going to come with it. They need a win and so do we, so it’s going to be a good battle. I think this is going to be one of the best defenses we’ll play all year, so it’ll be a challenge for us.”
On what Lions WR Jameson Williams’s speed brings to the offense: “Yeah, more he can – he can stretch the field and back the safeties up, back the corners up and open things up underneath and then certainly in some things, going across the field can displace coverage as well. Yeah, his speed’s a problem for defenses and it’s our job reading the ball in space and when we open it. Yeah, it’s been nice to have him back and hopefully he can make an impact sooner than later.”
On what he does on Sundays when the team has the day off: “No, I do not go to a cider mill. Watch some of the games. Watched the Carolina game against Minnesota. Yeah, that was really it.”
On how he watches NFL games on Sundays: “Yeah, I just watch it on TV. I get a pretty good grasp and then go upstairs and watch it for real, yeah. YouTube subscription works, so.”
On what the balance between the run and pass game has brought to the offense: “Yeah, it’s been good, and I think they kind of mentioned it earlier, like we’ve talked about this early in the week, we’ve been a good offense, but we can really be a lot better in both the run and the pass. There’s a bunch of areas to improve and get sharper at and some of the mistakes that are happening are things that we can’t repeat, and it’s been good to see guys respond the right way and I’m just as much a part of that as anybody. Some of the stuff that I’ve done needs to improve and but yeah, we’ve done things at a good clip right now and knowing that we have room to grow is kind of the most exciting part.”
On his reaction to Ryan Fitzpatrick calling him a ‘poor man’s Matt Ryan’: “Yeah, gave him a hard time. Ryan’s a good dude, but that’s it.”
On if he feels like he has silenced all of his critics: “Don’t care. Don’t care. There’s still going to be some and there will always be even if I’m playing great, if I’m playing poorly, there’ll always be haters and lovers and ignore them all and keep trying to get better.”
