Jaguars vs. Jets Postgame Transcript: Jets HC Adam Gase

(Opening statement) “Injuries. Trumaine [Johnson] went out with an ankle and didn’t finish. Ryan Kalil, knee, didn’t finish. Leonard [Williams], he got the wind knocked out of him and they evaluated him for a concussion. He cleared everything. With how it looked, they were just checking. Rontez [Miles] suffered a burner and they evaluated him for a concussion protocol. They cleared up. Sam [Darnold] sprained him thumb on his left hand. I forget what quarter it was, but he taped it up and went back in. At the end of the day, it wasn’t good enough. We hurt ourselves. They, obviously, handled adversity a lot better than we did. We didn’t really do anything we talked about in all three phrases. We were poor and made a lot of mistakes. We kind of battled back and got back into the game, but for the most part, they just beat us.”

(On if Jacksonville made any adjustments after their first scoring drive) “They dropped one of the coverages they were playing in a couple times and we caught them in that drive. Outside of that, they stayed pretty consistent throughout the game. There were pressures on third downs. They did a good job of getting to us, especially the third and long distances. Because on the first drive, we were more third and manageable. We were able to get short-yardage plays and a few third-and-three plays.”

(On why they were not doing what they practiced) “We didn’t. As far as what we talked about in protecting the football. We didn’t do that. Stop the run. We eventually did but Leonard [Fournette] ripped off that long one. The quarterback ended up hurting us because he was getting outside of the pocket. It was something we made a big emphasis on all week. We just didn’t do a good job there. Special teams, we wanted to play a cleaner game than what we have been playing. There are too many things there that I am sure Brant [Boyer] is going to pull his hair out about. So, I mean, there are things that we can absolutely correct and we have to correct because it’s the only way we are going to win games.”

(On if the offensive line is a concern) “Yeah. It’s so many things. It’s not just the line because we didn’t use our help a few times. You know, some of those play calls, I wish I could have back. Bad timing. A couple of times Sam kind of skipped one and went to two trying to get a bigger play than probably what was there. We have to get back to just doing the tiny, little things right. Using play calls to our advantage. A better job of running the football so we can stick with it. It just wasn’t good enough.”

(On if Robbie Anderson has a problem coming back to the football) “That last one (interception) wasn’t on him. We have to put that ball on the sideline.”

(On Darnold’s first interception) “It was hard for me to see because it was on the other sideline. Nine times out of 10, I think Sam works past that one. I know we were feeling pretty good after that first series, trying to make plays. We just have to do a better job of protecting the football. It’s a fine line between letting him do what he does well when gets outside of the pocket, he does some damage.  From where we are right now, we have to find a way to make positive plays and we make sure we hold onto the football.”

(On if he is worried about Darnold’s seven interceptions in the last two games) “No. I feel like I haven’t helped him enough. We haven’t put him in a good enough position. He is doing a lot of really good things. It’s just not working the way that it should. There are a lot of things where I am seeing him make strides in and you get excited about (it). I am seeing him take control of the line of scrimmage and the mike (linebacker) declarations and the things like that, he is just on it. He is making some of these changes and he is right. We don’t have everyone on the same page.”

(On what Darnold can do better from his second interception) “That was on me. That was a terrible play call. I shouldn’t have done that; it was just a bad play call. Earlier in the game, we called something similar. Same coverage and one (1-on-1) on the post. I think he thought he had the same thing. He did a good job of staying over the top and I don’t think he got enough on it.”

(On what needs to change in regard to Darnold throwing interceptions) “There are a lot of us involved in this – I am one of them. I look at play calls and I have to make sure I do a better job there. Some of decision making, we have to clean up. Some of the broken plays because there is a lot of good things that he does when the plays break down and he goes outside of the pocket and makes plays and some of those haven’t been working. We have to work on some mechanical things, some footwork things. I think his alignment sometimes bites him because he has had some success, even this year. Making some throws off-balance. I know a lot of us were saying the same thing after the Dallas game. He wasn’t aligned all the time and making accurate throws. I think everyone has played a part in it whether it has been the line, the backs, receivers, whoever it is, we have to do a better job of it. The interception thing is easy to point the finger at one guy. We always talk about it as a full group thing and we all have to do our job for that guy to do his.”

(On if he feels Darnold lost his composure) “No. I mean he was good on the sideline. I think he was just trying to make sure he was going the right things. I think that was the thing, he was just trying to work though by helping the center enough with the right things by making the right reads. We just [have to keep] trying to go through some things, saying, ‘Let’s get that one first down and see what happens.’”

(On if he feels Jamal Adams lost his composure after the personal fouls) “I didn’t feel that way. I didn’t feel that way with him.”

(On if he has clarity with C.J. Mosley) “I don’t right now. I haven’t talked to anyone about what is going on right now. I focused on this game. I don’t have an update. I will have one tomorrow.”

(On the team not being on the same page during Darnold’s interceptions) “I am saying, in general. That is part of the process. It’s not fun. I wish I could say absolutely 100% percent [that] we should be executing at a higher-level right now, but we are not. Nobody is pulling us out of this. We have to do it. We have to go back to practice. We have to go into our meetings and make sure we are getting better every day. We have to do it. No one else is coming to save us.”

(On improving the run game with the offensive line) “Later in the game, I was thinking, ‘Did I go away from it too soon?’ I was trying to get Lev [Le’Veon Bell] going a little bit. There weren’t a lot of lanes there, but it’s a tough front to go against. You feel like you are getting push all the time, but that is why they are pretty good. I still don’t think that eight sacks [is] what we should be giving up against that d-line. Even though they are really good, I think there are some things we could have done to help ourselves, but it’s a tough defense to run against.”

(On the defense giving up big plays today) “One, when the quarterback gets outside of the pocket, that is where you see a lot of explosive plays happen. That is why that was a big point of emphasis in letting him buy time and get outside and it be 1-on-1. Our guys’ backs are turned to the ball and they are trying to play the receiver. We let up that one big run. I thought we bounced back from it, and we responded on offense, which that is more of what we need if something bad happens, we respond. We have to find a way to do that more consistently.”
