Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp: Jumbo Shrimp shut out Sounds, claim series opener

Twine drives in a pair in 4-0 win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Four Jumbo Shrimp pitchers combined to yield just three hits Tuesday, as the team recorded their fifth shutout victory of the season, a 4-0 blanking of the Nashville Sounds at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Jacksonville (34-31) pitching issued eight walks, but recorded 11 strikeouts, including five from Jorge Guzman, who fanned the side in the ninth to strand the bases loaded and preserve the win over the Sounds (40-26).

Scoreless in the fifth inning, the Jumbo Shrimp grabbed the lead on back-to-back hits to begin the frame against Blaine Hardy (loss, 3-5). Brian Miller doubled to the gap in left-center, and Justin Twine followed with an RBI single up the middle to put Jacksonville ahead, 1-0.

In the sixth, Lorenzo Quintana, who led off the inning as a pinch hitter, was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Joe Dunand followed with a single through the left side to put two aboard. Miller then laid down a sacrifice bunt to push the pair into scoring position. Twine followed with a sacrifice fly to manufacture the game’s second run.

Jacksonville doubled their lead in the seventh. They loaded the bases as Brian Anderson was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and Deven Marrero and Chad Wallach followed by working back-to-back walks. Later in the frame, Dunand forced home a run by working a walk on a 13-pitch plate appearance to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-0 edge. Miller then chopped an infield single to score Marrero and push the lead to 4-0.

Paul Campbell made a rehab start for the Jumbo Shrimp, working four scoreless innings. He gave up one hit and three walks and struck out two. Parker Bugg (win, 4-0) followed with two scoreless innings, striking out three, before Jake Fishman tossed a scoreless seventh.
