Groundbreaking for The Underline

Monday morning, Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), along with Friends of The Underline, and elected officials celebrated breaking ground on the second phase of The Underline.. The event took place at Vizcaya Station. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, along with other elected officials and community leaders, attended this significant milestone for the project.

“The Underline is re-imagining 120 acres of public land to reshape our County’s mobility network and open spaces,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Miami-Dade is taking the lead in reshaping how we think of transportation: we are putting people first. We’re transforming underutilized public land underneath our Metrorail tracks into more walkable, accessible, pedestrian, and bicyclist-friendly areas that will serve 100,000 Miami-Dade residents within a 10-minute walk.”

The Underline is a 10-mile multimodal corridor  that is reimagining the underutilized land beneath Miami-Dade County’s Metrorail tracks. The existing M-Path is being transformed into a world-class walkable, bicyclist-friendly green space that has already garnered international recognition as a shining example of urban design.

“Watching how residents and visitors alike are able to benefit from the connection, community and beauty of the Brickell Backyard has been so satisfying,” said Commissioner Eileen Higgins. “I know neighbors in District 5 are more than ready to see the continuation of this amazing linear park and I’m grateful to the Underline team and all of our partners in moving so quickly to build out Phase 2.”

Phase 2 of The Underline, which begins construction this fall, is a little more than two miles long, and when completed will stretch from the southern end of Brickell Backyard at Coral Way to SW 19th Avenue, south of the Vizcaya Metrorail station. This phase will feature three amenity areas, bicycle racks and a repair station, native landscaping and public art, and other gold-standard facilities and details.

“Our residents should have easy access to a multi-modal transportation network that serves them regardless of how they choose to get around,” said DTPW Director and CEO Eulois Cleckley. “The Underline is connecting bicyclists, pedestrians and transit riders with world-class open spaces that will enhance their commute and bring more residents into our transportation network.”
