FIU Football News: Davis Names Offensive and Special Team Coordinators

MIAMI (April 5, 2021) – FIU football rounded out its coaching staff on Monday, as Butch Davis announced the hiring of Andrew Breiner and Casey Horny.

Breiner will serve as the offensive coordinator and coach the running backs, while Horny will fill the special teams coordinator position.

Breiner joins FIU after spending last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, while Horny spent the last four seasons with the Texas Longhorns. Breiner has an extensive history as an offensive coordinator and head coach, with Horny making his name on the special teams and defensive side of the ball.

“I’m very excited to have Coach Breiner and Coach Horny join our staff,” Davis said. “They both bring a great deal of expertise, energy, ideas, schemes and do a great job of motivating players. They will also be a great addition to our staff’s chemistry.”

Breiner comes to FIU with nearly 15 years of collegiate experience, including two seasons as the quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator with Mississippi State (2018-19) and six years at Fordham, with the final two seasons as head coach from 2016-17. Breiner has spent most of that time under current Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, as he spent a combined seven seasons with him at UConn, Mississippi State and Fordham.

“I am very appreciative of Coach Davis and the opportunity to learn under him,” Breiner said. “I look forward to working with the rest of our offensive staff and implementing a scheme that puts our best athletes in a position to be successful. Additionally, we have a very experienced and accomplished group of running backs that I am excited to work with and integrate them into an offense that scores points and leads to wins.”

Horny, the former special teams quality control coach at Texas, spent the last four seasons in Austin before making the move to Miami. Prior to joining the Longhorns in 2017, Horny was at Baylor for nine seasons as the assistant director of football operations and defensive quality control coach. In addition to his roles at Texas and Baylor, Honry spent time at Texas State as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2007 with Everett Withers and Randall McCray.

“I have a lot of respect for Coach Davis and I’m fired up to be at FIU,” Horny said. “I’ve followed Coach Davis throughout his whole career, and there are a couple coaches here now that I’ve spent time with like Coach Withers and Coach McCray so I am excited to work with those guys again. It’s been a great experience so far, we have great weather, facilities and a talented staff and the kids have been really good.”

Breiner is a native of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, while Horny hails from Goliad, Texas.
