FIU Athletics News: Record 21 Athletes in Honors College at FIU

MIAMI (Feb. 26, 2020) – Student-athletes at FIU continue to set the standard in the classroom as 21 Panthers are currently members of the Honors College.

The 21 total student-athletes in Honors College range across most of FIU’s 18 sports programs, with baseball, men’s basketball, football, men’s soccer, men’s track & field, men’s cross country, women’s track & field, women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, softball, swimming & diving, beach volleyball and volleyball all represented.

“The ideals of the Honors College are compatible with those of athletics,” Dean of FIU Honors College Juan Carlos Espinosa said. “We believe in competition, discipline, persistence, and the desire to develop your body and intellect, to strive for a sound body and a sound mind.

“We expect our students to push themselves beyond their limits, to be fearless in the face of new challenges whether it is difficult and unfamiliar academic work or the desire to break through and achieve a personal feat you once thought impossible. In Honors, as in any athletic pursuit, the final result is dependent on the effort you put into your pursuit.”

Among FIU’s represented programs, Randy Horner’s swimming & diving program leads the way with five student-athletes currently in Honors College at FIU. Most recently, the swimming & diving program earned a 3.74 GPA for the fall semester, which was the second-highest among swim & dive Division I programs, behind only Nebraska-Omaha ‘s 3.76.

“We are extremely proud of the standard our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff have set at this university,” Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia said. “Their hard work and commitment to academics continues to produce remarkable results.”

Earlier this athletic year, FIU was awarded the C-USA Institutional Excellence Award and the C-USA SAAC Cup. The C-USA Institutional Excellence Award is given to the school with the highest GPA, while the C-USA SAAC Cup is awarded to the school with the highest overall point total among member schools. The areas of emphasis for the SAAC Cup include academic excellence, career development, financial literacy and community service.
