OWLS TOP BLAZERS IN THRILLER

On Thursday night, the Owls defeated UAB in a matchup of Top 40 teams in the nation in a thrilling 88-86 ballgame. FAU’s winning streak is tied with UNC Wilmington for the second-longest active winning streak in the nation. FAU’s last loss, and only loss of the season, came against Ole Miss on Nov. 11.

Johnell Davis put the team on his back with a career-high 36 points off of the bench. The sophomore guard from Gary, Indiana posted efficient shooting numbers in all three phases, going 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the field, 4-of-6 (66.7%) from 3-point range and 10-of-11 (90.9%) from the free throw line. Davis’ 36 points are the fourth-highest in a single game in Owl history, and only three behind the all-time record of 39, held by DeAndre Rice from 2007. No Owl had scored more than 34 points since Rice scored 39 in the ’07 season. Davis also came through in the clutch, scoring the final eight points down the stretch for the Owls in a nail-biting finish.

For the second game in a row, FAU finished strong with their backs against the wall. Against North Texas, the Owls finished strong with a 13-0 run to seal the 50-46 win. In the win over the Blazers, the Owls trailed 82-76 with 3:48 remaining, but used a 12-4 run to capture the conference win.

STATS & NOTES

  • Davis doubled his previous career-high with the 36-point effort against UAB. The 36 points are also the third-highest scored in a single game in all of Conference USA this season, only two behind UAB’s Jordan Walker’s top mark of 38. Davis has reached double figures six different games this year and is second on the team in scoring with a mark of 11.5 points per game
  • Giancarlo Rosado played a key role in the Owls’ big win over the Blazers. With starting center Vladislav Goldin in foul trouble, Rosado entered the game and recorded eight points, eight rebounds and three assists while shooting 4-of-5 from the field. Rosado got the comeback run started with a big put back layup with 3:15 remaining to cut the lead to 82-78. Rosado is averaging 5.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 59.3% from the field
  • Remarkably, FAU has registered more assists than its opponent in every game so far this season. The Owls won that category against UAB by a 15-11 margin. Jalen Gaffney led the way with six helpers for the Owls, only one shy of Rosado’s season-high of seven. FAU is ranked second in C-USA in assist-to-turnover ratio with a mark of +1.31
  • Alijah Martin recorded a career-high 10 rebounds against UAB. Martin has shown his complete well-rounded skill set with an average of 5.5 rebounds per game to rank second on FAU, in addition to his team-leading 12.8 points per game. FAU outrebounded UAB 39-30, making that the 11th time this year the Owls have won the battle on the boards
