FAU Earns First Sweep of 2022

BOCA RATON, Fla.  – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team defeated Fordham by a 10-3 score on Sunday afternoon, giving the Owls their first series sweep of 2022.

FAU moves to 9-4 on the season with the win and continues to capitalize on a steady dose of hitting. FAU has recorded double-digit hits in 10 of their last 11 games and holds a 10-1 record when doing so.

The Rams fall to 2-9, with their two wins coming at home and their nine losses, all on the road, at the hands of Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and FAU.

QUOTABLE

Head Coach John McCormack on the team’s two-out success
“[Tyler] Burnham, we are bringing him along slowly. He got six outs, which is important. I thought [Jacob] Josey had a nice four inning stint. [Sam] Drumheller was ok and Marc [DeGusipe] was pretty good. It is coming together. The offense was good, and we played clean defense. We had the one bobble in leftfield, but that seems to be the norm. It is a good sweep. We get the day off tomorrow and will be back at it Tuesday.”

THE BEGINNING

The Owls were the first to get on the board, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first by taking what the Rams were giving. FAU’s first three runs were scored on six walks, a sacrifice fly and just one hit, an RBI double by Nolan Schanuel. FAU would add a fourth run in the bottom of the third to build a 4-1 lead.

THE TURNING POINT

The game turned on the performance of Josey, who held Fordham scoreless through four innings, while the Owls continued to tack on runs, totaling six runs in the same span.

THE FINISH

Fordham scored two runs in the final three frames while the Owls added their 10th run for the 10-3 final.

THE ARMS

  • Burnham started for the Owls and was on a tight pitch count. He would finish with his best outing so far, including two innings of work, stretching his pitch count to 50 pitches. He had five strikeouts and allowed one run on one hit and walked three
  • Josey, saw his first 2022 action out of the bullpen. Josey, too, had his best outing of the season throwing four scoreless innings to pick up the win (1-2), scattering five hits, walking one and recording a season high five strikeouts
  • Drumheller pitched the seventh, giving up one run and three hits to six Fordham batters
  • The final two were thrown by DeGusipe, who also allowed one run on one hit and struck out one

THE BATS
