FAU Downs Charlotte, 2-0

BOCA RATON, Fla. – On Sunday afternoon, the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team defeated Charlotte by a final score of 2-0. The Owls earn three Conference USA points with the win, and now stand at 6-5-3 and 2-2-1 in C-USA action.

FAU scored in lightning-fast fashion in the first half, not even two minutes into the game. Bri Austin sent a cross to the front of the goalie’s box that was tipped by Mia Sennes then finished off by a sliding Morgan McDonald. The score was the first of McDonald’s collegiate career and came only 1:41 into the match.

That score held until the second half, then was doubled up with Austin’s team-leading fifth goal of the season. Gi Krstec sent a beautiful through ball up to Austin, who ran it down and beat the keeper to make it a 2-0 lead in the 66′. That lead proved to be more than enough for the stingy FAU defense, who pitched its sixth shutout of the season.

QUOTES FROM THE OWLS

“It was a great start to the game, as we scored two minutes in,” FAU head coach Patrick Baker said. “To score early was massive for us, we haven’t done that yet this year. We played one other time this year when we played somebody on a Sunday who hadn’t played on the past Thursday. Today was tough, because Charlotte didn’t play Thursday and had the whole week to prepare, while we had just gone to play a very good Rice team on Thursday. We just grinded it out, it wasn’t a pretty performance by us, but we played really well in other games and came away with nothing. It was really important today, no matter what the scenario was, to have one more goal than they did, and we got a massive three points here to come to the halfway point of the conference season.”

NOTABLE

  • With the goal and assist today, Austin leads the team in points (14) as well as goals (5)

  • Lexi Gonzalez tallied two saves on her way to her third shutout of the year
  • Charlotte held a 10-7 edge in shots as well as a 6-3 lead in corner kicks
  • FAU has now allowed one or fewer goals in 11 out of its 14 games this year
  • The Owls haven’t allowed multiple goals in a game in seven straight
